If the medium isn't important then why all the push to go digital? Unless you think there is something inherently better about that particular medium :ohhh:

Nikkaz love spitting idealisms and platitudes :snoop:

Even if there was a scenario where physical books were gone and phased into digital copies, I still think libraries could and should exist.

It's not like library exclusively means book.
Libraries in Egypt, Africa and Rome had scrolls and tablets.
...not those tablets.

Fair enough. Whenever you're ready to come back and explain why a medium developed thousands of years ago is essential...i'll be here. FYI there are several piss poor "studies" concerning the benefit of paper over digital and well as i said they are piss poor at best in terms of conclusions.

Can you direct me to some of these studies?

So would it matter if there were no physical books at a library?

i don't know.

we are living through a transformational time in human history.
the fact that we are discussing the importance of physical books vs digital text is a prime example of that.

imagine going back in time 15 years and telling people "yo...books are gonna be played out soon."

all you would get is :skip: :leon::camby:.

now look at us...we are seriously looking at books.....BOOKS becoming obsolete as a very possible reality.
that shyt is crazy.

written language is one of the few things that defines a civilization and to see written language change the medium in which it is expressed is a huge fukking deal.

however, my biggest concern as far as libraries are concerned is that they provide information for those who are most deprived of it.

@Orbital-Fetus, I didn't know you were on this site too. Old school JBO boss.

:salute:

Sidenote: I prefer both physical and digital books... though a part of me would like to see physical books stick around forever.

I'm not against progress, but I'm sure we will move towards a world in which everything is digitalized, people won't care to write with a pen anymore, and thus we will be totally dependent on machines and one power shortage/virus away from losing all our history and not being able to communicate with each other. Hopefully I won't see that day.

I can't get on that e-book trend, not for the books I use. I need constant flipping, labeling of important pages, and so on. Only a physical book will do in those cases.

There's not way you can tell me typing versus writing does not effect motor control and other areas of the brain. Similarly, you cannot tell me looking at a one dimensional screen into the third wall is the same as a 3d object.
