it fell off for 2 reasons:

1. when more & more shows started coming out, naturally shows like the apollo & soul train lost some of their luster. especially when 106th & park came out - before it got wack.

2. when stations like NBC started picking up its syndication rights, only to show it at like 3am and chit. it was way better off being syndicated by UPN & WB affiliates.

ok, what show do you consider similiar to the Apollo set up?

didnt they have the gong show on tv back in the day?

thats the only thing i would say.

good ass points, i forgot all about how it got pushed back to crazy ass times.....that's crazy.

And yea, i remember the gong show. From what i remember that show was actually on the air around the time showtime at the apollo was still popping. And, even when it was on it wasn't making no noise like that....was more of a white people show

the best apollo timeslot that i remember was circa mid-late '90s when steve harvey was hosting. WB had it on sunday nights at like 10pm, at least here locally.

it was like the grand finale to the weekend, and often times a hot topic on monday morning. that was the main era that i watched regularly.

I remember the time period of steve harvey as the the period in which it was falling off/had fallen off.

And i watched it during the same era you are talking about too cause I remember it like how you just explained it too.

The quality of music fell off in music. Imagine people trying to rap like Gucci Mane or singing like T-Pain :skip:

the apollo is back actually. its on bet centric.

i havnt seen it yet, but i think their aiming for a mature demographic. kinda like the way the soul train awards are now.

it probably was the falloff point for the show. i dont know. honestly, the main attraction was the guest performances. alot of those joints were big deals. like that puff daddy & the family medley.

yall remember when that show motown live came out? i think NBC had the rights to that jawn too.

its one of those shows i was talking about. it didnt last long, but when it was out, it had more of a must-see tv feel to it than apollo & soul train by that time. it kind of knocked them down a couple pegs actually. and i think all 3 of these shows had chitty timeslots.
