How did Peloton convince people to spend $20 a month to use their $2500 treadmill

But you are assuming that what you would do is best and what others want. For a lot of people it’s a great piece of equipment that provides benefits.

My girl has the tread, it’s a good piece of equipment, allows you to work out on your schedule, in climate control and the content is really good. I wouldn’t buy it but I have a subscription through her and from a cardio perspective it’s actually enjoyable.
I understand what you’re saying but it can’t be a good value if there are other, cheaper treadmills out there with pretty much the same exact features, with different types of classes of course.

Yeah but how can you determine value to another person spending their $?

Wild that the concept of personal preference escapes y’all.

Because everyone ain’t broke. Some people like nice shyt and will pay for it.

Nothing’s stopping you from getting a $179 plastic bike from Walmart.

NYC (but PGH will forever be home)
I see PTON owners getting offended and resorting to name calling:

"Y'all dudes are just too broke to understand" :mjlol:

At the end of the day, as gyms and fitness classes come back online, these bikes are an overpriced exercise machine (a technology that has existed for damn near a century) that charges an outsized subscription fee.

And the fact remains that its biggest utility for most owners was its status symbol, and a rather poor one at that. Because unlike a nice car, watch, or a house, a damn bike is not on display for all to see.

Unfortunately, the Company must continue with this subscription-model to continue branding itself as an SaaS and to justify its lofty (and unstainable) valuation. But things are going south very quickly:

The answer's in the name. Outside of simple spin classes you have access to actual trails/routes for competition-level rides. The bike even adjusts for incline/decline/resistance/gear shifts on the fly. (Pelton Tread treadmill does the same for street/trail running.) The entry price for the hardware is that way on purpose, they don't want Planet Fitness people.

Just because it’s overpriced to you doesn’t mean it’s overpriced to some or many. A lot of their customers prefer the convenience, accountability-factor, have multiple users per household, prefer the flexibility and privacy of a at-home service/product.
Pretty much. People think because they can’t afford something or because something is not reasonably priced for them that everyone feels that way, and that’s just not what it is. :yeshrug:

Same way people buy $3,000 TVs, and pay 100-150 a month for cable.

People buy $1,200 phones, and pay 100-200 dollars a month for service

People buy $3,000 computers / laptops, and pay 80+ for internet.

People buy 50 - $70,000 BMWs, and spend 2000 – 3000 a year fixing and maintaining it

Like all of these things I mentioned before, owning a Peloton became somewhat of a status symbol. Secondly, there are people that pay 15-20 dollars for Quality cycling classes several times per month, and saw on the Peloton as an investment. Lastly, people thought it was going to be years before gyms open back up

Once gyms open back up, people slowly starting to figure they were wrong about all of these assumptions, and the change in overall perception began to reflect itself in the decline in sales.

This. Most gyms already offers cycle classes as part of the membership, so no need for peloton once people were back outside.

Not quite that simple. That skips over the ability to do it at home and not go to a gym which some people have no interest in doing.

Some people like the machine and some people don’t see the value. Not sure how/why people are trying to invalidate such an individual choice.
