Garbage ass goons? They were certified killers. When you got the most killers you win. That's how Marlo was able to come to the top. He was a killer and he had a team of real killers. By the time the Barksdales went to war they were begging for soldiers.

Barksdale organization was around since the mid 90s. By the first episode which was set in the early 2000s, the cops still didn't know who Avon or String were. All those years operating and the police still didn't know them nikkas. Marlo was just around for year or two.

Actually he didn't get large until a year before we're introduced to him, they were racking up bodies, they were charged with 10 murders and were only convicted on 3, which happened to be one of McNulty's cases and that's what started the investigation. Marlo was introduced in the same way, only he "evolved" thanks to Chris hiding the bodies in the row houses.

Avon's run was short like Marlo's ...Marlo only became "the man" because Avon got hit with the twenty for parole violation, thanks to Stringer snitching.

Barksdale didn't have the whole west. They had the projects which was the "prime real estate". When Avon and them was selling cut and was dried up, nikkas from other blocks was still serving nikkas.
