How come the cities of DC and Baltimore never produced any rappers? Two major cities on East Coast where black people are the largest population groups.

:patrice:
I think identity is a problem. Americans think on terms of "North East" "South" "West Coast" and neither city fits perfectly into one of those boxes

Also, I think the level of relative investment in a city's economy determines how much is put into entertainment, Cause entertainment is a form of marketing that drives tourism among other things. So economic investment and investment in the entertainment sector go hand in hand.

If whoever runs shyt had an interest in developing maryland as a top international tourist destination, labels would be signing acts from b'more and all of a sudden flagship rappers would start popping up. DC I can't really see it being done en masse, cause it's a federal city. It's a tourist hotspot already so it doesn't need marketing. Plus it's a national security risk.

shyt that might be why the DMV area artists don't get signed in the first place. The federal capital of a country is the last place you wanna go outta your way to attract a wanton influx of people. LMAO go to DC during July 4th and try to drive outta there regular and see what happen :mjlol:
:ehh: Never thought about it this way but it makes sense

That’s a huge reason why NY rappers get so much hype, proximity to the money

DC
Theyve produced tons of rappers

The area just hadn't had many blow up and none have become superstars

Plus it seems like folks dont really work together here like they might somewhere like Atlanta.

But mainly aside from wale, who is highly polarizing outside of DC/Bmore, they just havent found the right one to crossover and really bust shyt wide open.

Wale was closest and did the most, especially with mixing in gogo into his music originally but he seems to have moved away from that in his career, and while dc artists are talented, theres not a DC rap 'sound' right now that is unique just to us

Theres plenty of rap in dc at least. Its just all so fragmented

Plenty of people trying but zero local support. Nobody discusses local music outside of go go and thats been declining for a minute too.

My theory is that DC and Baltimore have been established as major touring destinations for black music since the 70's. Every rapper in the 90's came thru on the regular for shows, radio promo, Howard Homecoming, Morgan St. etc. So we never really had a need to check for the local scene since there is always a major mainstream artist in town. Just an idea...

Them Lo Lifes...
I remember bout 2002-3 a 16 year old phenom named Comp outta Baltimore was signed to Def Jam.

They sent out a whole project for promo.

During a conference call, I inquired about what they planned on doing with the guy, because he was out of Baltimore and dope.

They said nothing if he doesn't catch.
