‘A second-rate bean’: Houston’s new bean sculpture scorned in Chicago

Anish Kapoor’s “Cloud Gate” sculpture sits in Millennium Park in the city of Chicago. (Videoblocks)

The war of the beans started when some northern out-of-towner called Houston, which prides itself in its eclectic arts scene and cuisine, a “cultureless abyss” — a surefire way to invite a hailstorm of hate mail from Houstonians.

The bean at issue — the new bean in Houston — arrived in the city’s Museum District on Monday, lowered onto a new plaza near the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston with the help of a giant crane and an army of construction workers. The sculpture, called “Cloud Column” by Anish Kapoor, is shaped less like a bean, really, and more like an elongated egg, reminiscent of the alien spaceship from the movie “Arrival.”

But, with its stainless steel round shape, it’s also strikingly similar to the other, more famous bean, the one that is The Bean: Chicago’s picturesque epicenter where tourists flock for selfies in Millennium Park, formally titled “Cloud Gate.”

‘A second-rate bean’: Houston’s new bean sculpture scorned in Chicago

Houston lame as fukk tryin to bite Chicago's bean... :gucci:

...what kinda city fighting to "try" to be world class does that?

“If being surrounded by a cultureless abyss insufficiently communicates to confused tourists that they are in Houston, the bean’s verticality will therefore act as an additional reminder of their poor life choices.”

“It’s a leftover bean, a second-rate bean that’s been lying around in storage for the better part of 20 years, because nobody else wanted it,” Janssen responded. “Nobody except Houston wants a leftover, second-rate bean.”

To be fair, the city of Houston didn't ask for this. If you want to place any blame, look to the architect of this bean. He's the one decided to place it there. Oh and Atlanta is the king of sprawl sunbelt cities. It even sprawls more than Houston.

Weather was the only thing holding me back. I legit despise the cold with every fiber of my being. But as the article quoted someone as saying, Houston does seem to be lacking in palpable culture ... the biting of the Chicago bean is so telling.

Houston is the king of the sprawly sunbelt cities, and laid the blueprint for uncontrolled, sprawling land expansion cities to be even considered as world class.

I was all set to move to Chicago next month but now the same type of opportunity became available to me in Houston. With all things being equal (mainly the amount of $$ at my disposal) Houston is looking like the better choice:patrice:
I know more people in Chicago therefore more already established connections, but I've always been open to new things therefore starting fresh in Houston wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing to me.
Plus the rent :merchant:
I'm from the midwest but Chicago rent is ridiculous, esp. when I compared it to Houston prices I was seeing.

Shii Imma be able to live relatively well in Houston if what I'm seeing is true:jbhmm:
What other things should I take into consideration? How's the dating game, social life, weed prices etc. in both places? Weigh in and help me eat brehs:jbhmm:

What's your salary offer in both cities?

you also have to factor in nightlife, dating scene, things to do, etc. If you a bachelor(single with no kids) Chicago wouldn't be a bad look. Walkability, better downtown, more 24 hour spots.

Try buying a 5000 sqft mansion in a nice neighborhood in the Chi for $300k :rudy:

my mother’s fam is from the Chi, 127th and mlk so I know that city backwards. Still wouldn’t trade Harolds chicken for Frenchys any day of the week.

I just left houston, I'd still rather have a 500k house in Chicago than in Houston anyday.
If you've never lived in a City City, you'll never understand how boring those spead out southern cities are.
That's were people from chicago and NY go when they decide they can't hang up north anymore.
I personally know 4-5 women who've picked up and moved down there in the last couple years to try and start over. God bless them on their journey to wipe their slates clean and snag some unsuspecting southerner.
