Elaborate? Being from the Eas Coast its difficult to find places that play good 90s hip hop. The 2 places I found have mostly white or mixed clientele. Otherwise there is something for every demographic and music style.
What's your beef?
1. Downtown space is completely wasted, back in 2007-2009 the nightlife was pretty decent w/ Toc Bar and Butterfly lounge ect..ect.. but those days are long gone.
2. Segregation... the is self explanatory. Its either black, white, or mexican....mixed crowds are too few a far between.
3. Music scene should be HUGE, population has been steadily increasing but unless you're a big name (Drake, Beyonce...ect.) , people will not go to or support shows. Even with Day for Night Fest, which had Flying Lotus and Kendrick Lamar headlining, the turn out was SUBPAR for a festival. I am one of the organizers, Houston has a long history of great artist coming down only to sell a few seats and small uninterested crowds. Some artist refuse to come back here for that very reason. Had FreshDarkFest (which was 2 weeks ago) been in Cali, NY or even Austin there would have been a line out the door.
4. Racism...lets be clear here. We've all tried to go to that one bar/club and wasnt let it because you looked too "urban". Its happen to me countless times and even had a few bars trending on FB/Twitter because of blatant racism.
Don't get me wrong, Houston has its great moments when it comes to parties/shows/night life...but coming from Austin/LA/NY its no where close. Strip Clubs here are great but too expensive for normal dudes who don't care to stunt or parking lot pimp. Went to Oakland last week, was a hip hop show/beat scene show...bill had names nobody even knew but there was a fukking line out the door. Why is it that we can't get people to support local artist here?
