Prepare for liftoff: Houston approved for spaceport (Video)

Houston Business Journal

The Federal Aviation Administration granted a launch site license to make Ellington Airport the 10th commercial spaceport in the U.S., theHouston Airport System announced June 30.

Now, HAS can turn its attention to establishing the required infrastructure and support facilities needed to accommodate reusable launch vehicles, which will launch horizontally like commercial aircraft, rather than vertically.

HAS started aggressively moving forward with its spaceport plans two years ago, when the Houston City Council approved a $718,000 contract for a consulting firm to study how Ellington Airport can obtain a spaceport launch site operator’s license. However, HAS has looked into developing a spaceport in Houston since early 2011.

“Houston will play a lead role in commercial space operations in the 21st century,” Houston MayorAnnise Parker said in a statement. “We believe a licensed spaceport in Houston will not only serve as an economic generator for the city but also enhance Houston’s well-deserved reputation as a leader and key player in the aerospace industry.”

Meanwhile, NASA's Johnson Space Center also plans to have a significant role in the future of commercial spaceflight, JSC Deputy Director Kirk Shireman told the Houston Business Journal recently.

Yall I gotta ask: what is with this sudden growth in luxury and high-end houses, condos, shops, and walkable malls? Is the demand for luxury items that big in Houston? I know that a lot of rich Mexicans, Central Americans, Middle-Eastern, and Brazilians come to Houston for vacation but I have the strange feeling that Houston real estate might form a mini-bubble. Or is the demand for high-end luxury really that great?

I also feel that the city isn't doing enough for the middle and lower classes in terms of housing and recreation. What is your sense on this?

Good question and observation. Not sure what everyone else thinks. You right there are a lot of high end things popping up. Amazing that they seem (at least from the outside) to fill up fast. The oil industry is cyclical they say, so there is less spending and probably slower hiring right. There could be a bubble, but who knows. I've been here 3 years and heard stories about the booms and busts cycles. Good point about all the foreigners who use Houston as getaway spot too.

That whole uptown area is lowkey live as fukk if you're a black man. It's still a lot of nikkas out there sleeping on Upper Kirby. They got some lowkey night spots over there to get at some bytches.
Uptown and West U are actually dope as hell. Hudsons lounge on West U has a TON of lovely sistas out there.

There's this one spot in this mixed use development that has the glass skyways on Kirby...nice. I still like Dowling and Almeda as a default area, festive every weekend with food trucks and a nice clatchet hybrid crowd.

New latin/caribbean restaurant and lounge downtown called Calabash something...nice outdoor patio.

There was/is this spot at Shepherd and 59, called Mezzanine, I think they closed it recently. It had pool tables and karaoke upstairs. Outdoor patio downstairs. Real chill spot with mixed crowd to go on a weekday night.

I seened Calabash when it was under construction. I usually park in that parking lot when I'm at Rockets games. Is it any good?

It's a spot over there by River Oaks, but I forgot the name of it. Midtown on the weekends is live also, but them bouncers out there are racist. I suggest you take a white friend out there, and the bouncers and club patrons wont be so hard on you. I almost got into a fight with a white dude out there at Pub Fiction. He was talking hella shyt with HPD standing right there. Racist white coward. If he woulda dropped the N bomb I woulda been in jail that night.
