City flat at hell

It is so flat that one of the new things that Houston and Harris county are doing, is making parks that have man-made hills. There is one on Highway 6 with a great view of the city for anyone from Houston that wants to know. Also Hermann park (one of Houston's central parks) has this pyramid looking structure to overlook the Texas Medical Center (basically a mini-city of hospitals)

I was thinking of making a spin off thread of interesting places (with pictures) of Houston that might not be known to people that just came in the city. Places like Heights, Allen Parkway at night, interesting flea markets, the bats on Waugh Bridge, Hong-Kong City mall, Rice University underground bar, Menil collection that is free to the public at all times, etc.

What do yall think? Sometimes this city bores me but sometimes there are some real hidden gems. Especially if you like the art, performing art, and culinary scene.

Sounds good...personally I think it would work well in this thread...just to keep the conversation consolidated in this megathread. To differentiate your posts for "Interesting Places", at the top you could have the same title in colored big font text with a number. Either way though.

That would be interesting. I think most great cities around the country and the world that have the things you are talking about when it comes to interesting places within a city tend to be known easily because they have great connection between each other. Meaning, you can get from place to place without a car. Problem for Houston is the mass transit in that city is terrible. Until that improves, those gems will remain hidden even if they are great. Most sunbelt cities has this problem. LA did and that's why they are now building trains all over the city. Houston loves their cars, I get that. But there's only so long where you can get by on that especially since the city from my last visit is becoming more compact.

I'll keep it in this thread. That is a better idea.

That is how I found out about these places. I grew up in SW Houston were the bus system is adequate enough (not great) so on weekdays my mom would take off from work and would just take a bus and both of us would venture out and explore. My mom came from a city that for its lack of wealth had very good public transport. I guess all those trips as a child instilled that sense of taking a bus and seeing what the city has to offer.

That's how most will find out honestly. I know Houston is not a tourist city but part of the reason for that is it's hard to get anywhere without a car. Tourists are not going to want to sit in a car trying to get a feel of a city anywhere going from place to place. Houston isn't exempt no matter how much they love cars. Either they understand this now or it's going to be infrastructure hell in the future.

Uber, for what's it worth is changing that, even though it involves a car, doesn't involve any car issues..

This is the Bethel Church redesigned after the great fire that destroyed it. The location is in Freetown (now just Midtown). The roads were originally built of bricks because the people that lived in Freetown were former slaves. The city of Houston at the time didn't want to help the former slave build anything so they built Freetown completely through stretch. There is a very good African-American library that has great exhibits.
