You going off of a vacuum without applying what history these people have with the mother. Maybe she has known them for years and know they are good upstanding men that would never hurt her daughter or maybe they are gay and she's known them for a long time. What other similar scenarios in youth athletics of when a 13 year old girl goes on an overnight trip with 20 year old dudes alone?
Swimming, gymnastics, track&field happens all the time. You might have 2 or 3 coaches, and if it's a high level tournament, only the elite maybe 2 prospects would travel.
I have family member that was molested by a good family friend that their parents knew for years. A child molester is not going to make it obvious that they are a child molester, that's why parents have to do everything possible to protect their children.
Personally i don't have a problem with the cops stepping in, questioning the situation and making sure the girl is ok.
After he seen the papers, talked to the girl, and maybe called the mom, the situation should've been over by then. He's done his job, his due dilligence now go elsewhere. The cops were in the wrong for arresting the men and detaining the girl. they should be suspended, fired, something has to happen.
As far as letting your kids go off with other people besides family is a totally different issue then what the actual problem was with the cops and what they did once everything was provided they needed.

Of course and I agree with that. You kind of prove my point though, your child can be molested by anyone family or stranger. It really just depends on whether you are willing to trust the person you send your child with and have the safeguards like daily phone calls in place, and sexual abuse talks that would allow you to trust your child to someone else.
How can you tell if someone is a child molester?
You can't, that's why you protect your children and don't allow them to be those type of situations where molestation is possible.

Like I mentioned above, more and more cases in swimming and gymnastics have come out about kids getting molested because of lack of parental presence. And I'm sure there are a lot more cases which are not reported.
Not everyone can be that way as was stated in this thread. There are many kids that are in track, swimming, gymnastics etc that require a lot of traveling and a lot of parents can't be with their child all the time.
Certain pairings used to raise suspicion. Two adults of the same gender with a teenager of the opposite gender, used to be strange but now it could be that teen's gay parents.
but then it's a slippery slope. might as well make them live in a bubble with a helmet on. anytime your child is out of your view they could get raped/molested/mugged/kidnapped/murdered. At some point you do have to put a certain level of trust in humanity. not blind trust but reasonable. now "reasonable" depends on your level of tolerance and temperament. the same way you could say someone is irresponsible for doing this is the same way someone could say you're irresponsible for letting your kids go to school and leaving them under the supervision of adult teachers who's credentials/reputation/criminal records you haven't checked and who you may have met for 2 minutes (if at all). there is no right or wrong answer, it all depends on your level of comfort.

I wouldn't let my thirteen year old daughter go out of state with anybody. For the record, I wouldn't let my thirteen year old son go anywhere neither.
