Whenever I'm in a bad mood...I swear...this shyt sets me off!

House Music is FOREVER!

Word. listening to some djs spin that hot shyt right now at bossa nova civic club. I practically live here.

But yeah...house music has actually been kind of a tradition in my family. Especially on my mom's side.

They lived out in Jersey before they moved to ATL. And anybody with some knowledgeable expertise when it comes to music knows that NJ has a rich history when it comes to house. From Tony Humphries an Zanzibar in the 80s to producers like Todd Edwards in the 90s. All the way up to the Jersey Club scene now.

My relatives would always have those dance mix 95/96/97 cds and i would jam out to those.

With mixes from David Morales, Adam X, Funky Green Dogs, Kenny Dope Gonzales, Louis Vega, and people like DJ Skribble too.

My main inspiration though?

DAFT PUNK

Bought "Homework" in 1997. My life has not been the same since.

From there i sought to learn how to make house music and that led me to taking up DJing in 1999.

That was back when the rave scene on an underground tip was poppin. I had my time with that scene...from crazy warehouse raves to house parties where it would be kegs, drugs, cute raver girls and two turntables and a mixer.

Im 31 now. I just produce and dj on the side while i work a full time job. But I'm happy to of been doing that for almost 20 years...:wow:

Dawg....
i like "french-touch" type music.
Then french dudes was straight up killing shyt frm 1995-1999

Motorbass
Ettienne deCrecy
Daft punk (of course. Guy and thomas put out dope stuff on their own with Le Knight club and Together with DJ Falcon)
DJ Tonka
Laurent Garnier
Air (even though they don't make house...they are French).

All of that stuff was and still is dope.

And the funny thing is...their main inspirations were Chicago ghetto house DJs like Paul Johnson, DJ Funk, DJ Pierre, DJ Slugo, DJ Deeon

And if you ever listened to the aforementioned you should know how hard that shyt bangs out...especially at the club.

Those tracks were basically strip club music. :mjlol: really dirty hoes on the floor type bass thumpin type shyt. That's the stuff i love...especially playing it out in sets.

One thing I've always lowkey enjoyed...french culture and art.

Daft Punk and DJ Cam were my introductions to the "French Touch". Mr. Oizo and Cassius were the other ones.

They seem to have an affinity for the old.

Even check out Daft Punk's "Homework" album insert...

Seeing this as a 13 year old...:wow:

Then listening to the whole album and it was just bangin ass stuff like this.

I was in 7th grade and I seriously put this album on for all my friends and told them to check it out.

Still one of my favorite albums ever.

Btw...you got to put me onto some more african house.

That's one part of the house music spectrum i really haven't cracked the surface of.

Most of the stuff I play is either from the states or from Europe.

I fux with the European stuff...always have. Started out playing UK hard house and deep house from labels like kompakt and plastic city out of germany.

I've noticed more and more djs have been throwing african house in their sets. It's huge with me (beinv african...maybe that's why i always gravitates towards the stuff)...but they developed their own style that reflects the culture of africa perfectly.
My inspiration comes from playing like minimal house and techno...deep house..tech house...and progressive. Back when i was coming up trying to cultivate my own signature sound i was gravitating towards those type of records...ofcourse mixing it with chicago and detroit staples.

I was gaining that reputation as a black dj that was playing stuff that most djs period weren't touching...especially amongst black djs...but whatever.

I honestly consider house/techno to be the most colorless form of music their is...it took on a life of its own. Based on machines...and machinery. And electronics.

The whole idea of even putting together a set when I started djing was like constructing something new from something that already existed.

Personally I'm at the moment where i'm very philosophical about house and electronic music.

I remember when i was first getting into it and inspired by science fiction...and hip-hop. Trying to envision that future where technology and music fused together.

Now we are in the future and as evidence by this current edm explosion and house music being everywhere...from fashion commercials...to video games...to movies this is the sound of it.

Okay...little personal tidbit here.

I always have this fantasy in my head of DJing a party here in NYC...right in the city. Filled with models and tons of hot women period.

Hey if I can be that type of superstar globetrotting dj that's got a model girl on his arm...why not? Beats having a 9-5 you hate.

Nah...it's not even about fame or being rich or getting paid assloads for me. It's just the idea of playing a set of your favorite music for people that I enjoy.

Ive had gigs where Ive tricked people into liking a track they would of never liked because it was mixed right...and that's the magic of house djs. Seriously. Just watching a crowd vibe off of the music you playing man...:wow: there's no better joy.

I would love to get to the point where I'm doing shows overseas in like the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, Canada.

I'm trying to get started back up again here in new york though.

The game in 2015 is filled with options.

Back when i started in the 90s....all you had was two technics 1200s a mixer and records. That's what i still prefer to use.

But if you want to go that route without having to buy records...there's serato and native instruments traktor pro. Both use an adaptor and timecoded vinyls that work with turntables so you can plug your laptop in...use a portable hd with all your music and jam out. That's what i currently use.

Or you can get into cdjs. Pioneer has come out with a new one that you can plug a usb stick into and load all of your tracks into there. Very pricey though...i could never get into because of that...but eventually i want to move from turntables to cdjs and serato...mainly cause you can do more with them.

Diplo...is a shining example of when you use djing technology and take it to the limit. I saw him live at the mad decent block party a couplw of years back. Dude started out playing house techno electro house and club then seamlessly blended into dubstep...then rap...then back to dubstep and sped it all the way up to dnb bpms.

That's not easy to do with turntables given the limitations of the pitch control...but with cdjs and serato? GAME OVER.

Then you have controllers. Usb controllers.

This is the vestax vci380.
vestax-vci-380-top_960x540.v2.png

Basically it gives you everything you need. You can mix on these. Scratch. Blend. You have two channels so you can check one track in the mixer on the headphones so it's not coming out of the main mix and beatmatch no problem. This one comes with a lot of bells and whistles and is compatible with serato.

I notice alot of djs (mostly reggaeton djs from what I've noticed) have been gravitating towards these. Cause they're portable and all you need is a laptop and that is it to operate it. No lugging tables. No hooking up mixers. No nothing. Just plug it in turn on your laptop and you're good to go. You can also produce tracks with it...I'd get one for the studio.

Then you have other controllers like the ableton apc 40. For use with ableton. You can make tracks and remixes on the fly with this...
shopping

This is the mkII. You can check out tons of tutorials on youtube for that.

Then there's this new one i see Richie Hawtin using..
This is the Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol F1
kontrol-f1-top.jpg

You can hook this up to a usb controller or cdj and add effects...or you can sequence original productions live on the spot.

At that point though...you're just way beyond just playing music. That's for them techno dudes like Chris Liebing, Panpot, those gear heads...but i've heard what this thing can do and :wow::whew:

Personally for me...i just stick to what i know. I'm a traditionalist type of DJ. Two turntables and a mixer and headphones.
