Hood life is just another experience. Like Tribal life, WASP life, rural life. It's not inherently bad. If you think it is it's because of white supremacy and propaganda that uses coded words to equate the hood with negativity. That's why I encourage people to say what they mean.

Yall have a problem is ignorance, glorified violence and the like. That is hood life but a byproduct of systematic oppression. These hoods were fine before Regan and the crack era so the real problem you have is with that not the hood.

What I'm talking about is a self destructive mentality that people have that I call the hood mentality.

Language changes and evolves. When people use the phrase "hood mentality" it has nothing to do with the origins of the word hood or the act of living in a particular area in itself.

When people say "hood" or "hood mentality" they are referring to specific actions or mindsets. And yes, you are correct that it is negative. Unless people are using the term to prove how well they can fight or survive difficult situations.

That doesn't mean that people who live there are bad. It doesn't mean that people should be ashamed of their upbringing. It means just what I said - language evolves and changes and in 2015 that is where we are with the word "hood".

As a side note, I am not sure if people saved grease during the great depression but it wouldn't surprise me. There is nothing wrong with people being frugal. Eating swine on the other hand is another story. But I will ignore that we are discussing eating forbidden flesh and leave it at that.

Well I'm Black, I'm a woman, I'm [somewhat] educated, I own a corporation (I don't TELL people this- I let them assume the worst), and I'm from the hood/working class neighborhood. I don't understand what the point of putting down the hood. I've lived (and live) nice, but I've also lived in the hood. Violence, drugs, murder and crime are EVERYWHERE. No one socioeconomic group has a monopoly on being destructive. MONEY can cover it up, but it's still there. Otherwise there'd be NO Eliot Rodger, NO Colombine, NO Menendez brothers. MONEY and MEDIA coverage skew perception. Ask ANY Beverly Hills or Scottdale Police office and they'll tell you what's REALLY going down in these "UPPER CLASS" and Old Money neighborhoods.

Human nature can go towards destruction without proper mental/spiritual health.



I don't see Black people from the "hood" as any different. Most people I know that grew up rough, had better opportunities than their parents and are living financially better.

Not ALL Black people want to live around white people.
