Honest Conversation: Is Japan the best at making games?

I straight up don't even remember most western franchises. What do they even have to bring to the competition? The Last of Us?

Gonna need those starting 5's to compare, but yeah, Japan has probably always been better at making games than the West.

Bro, the video game industry is one of the examples of a market where capitalism has succeeded in bringing improved quality AND lower cost for consumers at the same time.

"quality" is subjective. Graphical fidelity =/= "quality".

It goes so, so much deeper than a starting 5, western game developers have put out so much more quality content and moved the ball so far forward in several key genres (multiplayer titles like shooters, sports games, o pen-world RPGs). Like I said earlier, when you take Nintendo (and to a lesser extent, Square Enix) out of the equation, the Japanese market becomes so much thinner compared to the western market.

If, gun to my head, I have to give you my starting 5 examples of the western market leaving the Japanese market behind:

Fallout
Grand Theft Auto
Call of Duty (some will hate that pick, but it's revolutionized the industry)
The Last of Us
God of War

But I could go on and on with examples of series that have brought better stories, graphics, and gameplay than what modern Japanese developers are usually offering.
