It's a continuous story. It makes the final four levels of Hitman 3 make sense. The if you listen to the NPC's dialogue you find a lot of mentions of kills that are in the previous games. The are also some recurring characters. Try thinking that it is one continuous game.

If you buy 1&2, I suggest that you use the Hitman 3 free upgrade so that you can play the games straight from Hitman 3. The first two games will benefit gameplay upgrades found in 3.
