It's false. Asians were still racially mocked in media before during and after civil rights. I'm still waiting on OP or somebody to provide proof of this memo that went out to white folks to stop being racist toward asians. People were still using the term Oriental in the 90's ffs.

The misconception is this:

The author is trying to debunk the talking point of "If america is so racist how did asians get wealthy" used against black folks from Asian American POV.

All the shyt the author wrote is unnecessary, that point is debunked from the fact that the country wasn't proactively discriminating against asians post civil rights as they do black people. Racist laws targeting black folks persisted to the 90's and beyond, for asians the 1930's at the latest.

It words it in a way that says the gains of asians came from whites deciding to let them get richer over the course of a time period that just so happens to cover the periods immediately before, during and immediately after civil rights.

More telling is that it focuses on per household income rather than hiring discrimination and frames the changes from the civil rights era as "slow dismantling of discriminatory institutions after World War II, and the softening of racist prejudices" instead of straight up referencing that segregation and hiring discrimination was downright outlawed in that period.

These people just write these articles so they feel they can fit in with the identity politics playing liberals, that's what's hot in the streets now. They know it's all bullshyt.

If people were actively trying to suppress your resources, y'all would be in the same place. Plenty of groups would still be in the same position in the early 20th century, if white folks didn't accept them as, faux white. The article states for the 900th time that your explanation is exactly what the article debunks. The article found that when racism ( not fukking stereotyping nonsense) decreased do to government propaganda push to lessen the hate and the laws against Asians, they were freely allowed to compete and started earning what they (unlike blacks) should have been allowed to earn in a fair and equal playing field.

It wasn’t until white people through government propaganda started to buying into the “model minority” propaganda did they reduce the hateful actions that those Asian stereotypes had always been used to justify. Negative stories vanished and positive ( to whites) stereotypes started to be the only prominent depictions. This was done as a strategy to be used to combat protests and demands for rights from blacks. Racism towards Asians was lessened, that was the driving factor.

The same thing happen after the Korean War. South Korea received huge investments from America and was propped up in the East as a model of the success you would have if you were Anti-Communism. Most of Asia was Communist at the time, so it was important for Propaganda that South Korea be top 3 in the region socio-economically while North Korea could be contrasted as a socio-economic failure solely on the fact they were Communists.

I've seen documentaries about most HYPHEN-American group. I'm familiar with these stories....what groups have in common and what distinguishes them from each other.

I don't doubt that there was a propaganda campaign. I'm doubting that it erased or lessened stereotypes or fears about Asians and that it led to more economic opportunities for them in mainstream America. Again....Americans saw their soldiers fighting against Asian enemy combatants in the 1940s(Jap)1950s(Kor.)...60s and 70s(Viet). Whites don't know, care or care to know the differences between Asians. The coverage of these wars/conflicts would serve to counter this pro-Asian govt. propaganda.


I believe that the groups that make up Asian americans are and have been insular communities. Either from circumstance or by choice, Asians lived among other Asians and did business with each other.

I think because racial/ethnic groups lived in separate areas...and Asians weren't fighting to integrate socially with them....that Asians were invisible to whites during that era.




I don't doubt that during the Cold War...US wanted to have S.Korea succeed as an attack on Communism. US had spheres of influence all over the world and pumped money and resources into a lot of places. I'm saying that of all the places America has occupied, it surprises nobody that S.Korea and Japan are among the most powerful economies decades later. Not a coincidence either.
