How many Black people do you know breh? :stopitslime:

There's a reason Thriller sold a gazillion copies. Black people around the world (not just NYC) love that album. Didn't Rihanna do some "makossa" shyt a couple years back? "Wanna Be Startin Somethin" was HUGE. Imo, the Blackest song MJ ever did because it combines African vibes, steel pan (Caribbean vibes) and African-American vibes. I think I read somewhere Quincy Jones said that it was meant to be the joint where MJ shouts out all Black people, and it was deliberately placed FIRST on the album :wow:

I think the "Thriller is for cacs" thing is silly as fukk, but I understand where it comes from. Thriller's first single was that Paul McCartney weak shyt. And Black people were like: "here we go. This nikka selling out."

Thriller is less Black disco than Off The Wall, but that alone doesn't make it lesser than OTW.

:mjlol:
i know a WHOLE HELLVA LOTTA black - breh
i was born & raised in the projects in da boogie down

and as far as your comment of 'thriller selling gazillion copies' supports more of my point more then yours
cause as a ole head i remember my parents, aunts, uncles all my elders

specifically sayingshyt like.....
OTW is for us :blessed:

Compare that to me, who has traveled the world, lived in Nigeria, has family and close friends all over the US (Boogie down included). I know ALL kinds of Black people.

I totally get that. I've had this very convo on The Coli before. My parents loved Off The Wall. It came out at a time when they were in high school/university. It was that aspirational Black disco shyt.

MJ wanted to take Off The Wall to a whole other level on Thriller (and he totally did). The first single with Paul McCacney made Black people, especially in the US, think that MJ was selling out. And the "OTW is for us" thing is a backlash from MJ going all weird/expanding his fanbase/skin color changing. But make no mistake - Thriller is black as fukk. shyt... in hip hop alone, I'm willing to bet Thriller has been sampled more than OTW.

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
:what:

again, i aint never EVER heard a black person say thriller was better (forget about this thread title - for blacks thriller >> OTW is the ultimate blasphemy)

thriller was a rock/pop album
while OTW was a soul/R&B

da fukk black is gonna prefer rock/pop over soul/R&B
unless we talking bout some c00nish/self hating mutherfukker

U trying way too hard. And AGAIN. Thriller was Pop/RnB and Off The Wall was Disco/RnB. U can't just reduce Thriller to a Rock/Pop album when it barely had any fukkin rock songs on it. nikka u talkin some bullshyt and I'm one of the people who feel Off The Wall >>> Thriller. But thanks for proving my point tho. U literally proved the point I was tryna make from the beginning with these albums.

The MJ comparison is bad.

It's more like House Of Ballons vs. Starboy.

And NY State of Mind trounces Shootouts.

One Time For Your Mind trounces Shootouts.

This shyt is fukkin ridiculous. I literally JUST had this fukkin argument a few weeks ago wit nikkas I can guarantee far more gully than u. They was in favor of Thriller. I'm born and raised in NYC. I didn't actually converse with white people for the whole first half of my life and to say cause a black person prefers Thriller more is a c00n is some real c00n shyt to say in itself. fukk kinda box do u think nikkas is in fam? Thriller has a lot of stand out classic tracks. Off The Wall is more soulful and flows great. Which is why I prefer it. But u got alotta people who prefer Thriller for all the bangers it has. nikkas was talking about the quality of the albums and u bringing this shyt into some other shyt. Maybe u need to just stick to Biggie conversations. Thriller has actually been sampled more in Hip Hop than Off The Wall has. Thriller was sampled for fukkin Illmatic for christ sakes. :snoop:. smh.

IWW is in no appreciable way better than Illmatic, it's just that most of these younger fans were introduced to Nas at this point in his career, because the album was such a commercial success relative to Illmatic, it was also easier to digest than the sometimes dogmatic lyricism in Illmatic. Also even though they were lyrically comparable the production in IWW was wildly uneven.

nygga, its just a 1 1/2 year difference in the release of the albums.

Illmatic didnt make me a Nas stan. I took notice of Nas at that point, but I was more into Redman and Keith Murray until IWW.

I didnt buy Illmatic off top. I had all the cassette singles for some reason and not the album.. which looking back is weird. I was evidently a fan.

I got IWW and Illmatic at the same time in 96.
