our school system is so fukked up. i didnt learn shyt that i couldn't have done myself. teachers just reiterate words from a book, its nothing relevant to real life.

there should be classes that teach you how to take care of real life shyt

finances (taxes & economics)
communication
art/music appreciation
english
relationships
time management
physical education
politics
health education
etc

math, science, history and other more specific topics should be saved for the college level. but elementary and middle schools are kept the same. by 8th grade most people know enough for everyday dealings and they will continue to learn those topics in high school (just not classes dedicated to it).

and i know a lotta people don't go to college but over time (after a generation) of going thru this system people will be more ready for living their life, not just filled with useless facts.

seems reasonable to me :yeshrug:

whats your solution?

The public school system sucks.

All of those classes you listed would be great, but too many of the kids who get allowed to move on couldn't handle those kind of courses.

I got a cousin who graduated from high school & college and shes functionally illiterate. She woulda offed herself if she had to do anything more than memorize and reword the teacher's lesson plan.

you dont stop in 8th grade. your just not sitting in a classroom, taking notes. some classes are but its more group discussions than lectures. teachers dropping knowledge on how to live in the world so if its your last education you can be ready to live on your own, get a job, start a business, stay happily married, not go into debt, live/eat healthy, etc

those things are more important than knowing than wasting an entire school year learning precalc. unless your gonna be a scientist its not relevant to what you do everyday. now if you pick up some higher level math learning about the tax system, that's useful.

its just a different way of looking at what schools are there for.

Agreed. Grade school should be reading, general math, history, gym, art and music to see what you're into. Highschool should be more common sense like entering the real world, finances, relationships, etc. Offer math and science classes to those interested but dont require them.

My High School tried to incorporate more of this stuff but the Board of Ed shut those ideas down saying children needed these skills for the workforce.

the schools that offer that kind of curriculum are private (im not talking religious, im talking that new age & montesorri type education.)
High school's main goal should be to develop more well-rounded students, and believe it or not that means incorporating core knowledge into the curriculum. That's why they require you take a certain amount of core classes on top of your electives, and that's the way it should be. you can choose to take accounting as an elective, same with art/music appreciation. you can also choose to take classes centered around health or even be involved in student government. I agree the school system is pretty messed up, but at the same time if you chose to not be actively involved in your own education (and you get nothing out of it) thats on you.

High school is what you make of it.
It's just like sports. If you put more into it, you get more out it. It you do less, you get less.

Really dawg, you trying to clown math and science......

How the f*ck are you going to teach people real life skills without challenging their ability to critically think.

At bare minimum students should be required to take statistics and a remedial version of physics......

Like if the guy said add in civics and logic I'd be with him, but he wants the US to fall even farther behind? :shaq2:

Critical Thinking
Intro to Philosophy
Personal Finance and Financial Responsibility
Constitutional Law (i.e., what your rights are)
Local Law
Local Government
Nutrition, Diet and Exercise Education

Everything in highschool just boiled down to memorizing the most trivial facts about shyt I'd never care about and shyt I wouldn't apply to anything ever in real life ( other than school, because by then I knew what my core interest in school subjects were ), not to mention all of it would be forgotten soon after. I would've loved for more flexibility to choose my classes in high school and more diversity on top of it.

I understand why you would want to make more well-rounded students, but you aren't going to be able to hammer in subjects into a students mind if they don't already have a vested interest in the subjects you're teaching, or if they don't find it practical or intriguing ( save for the few really dedicated students); doing such just wastes time that could be going towards accentuating the students strengths or broadening their knowledge in other areas.

I think keeping math is vital though, and shouldn't go away, but at the least how it's taught should be changed, I wouldn't mind seeing everything else in school undergo drastic changes though. All in all there needs to be a more progressive approach to how we teach kids and prepare them for life after high school.
