How does Christopher Walken's character (Nicky) survive so long playing Russian Roulette in The Deer Hunter? Each time he plays, he has roughly a 50/50 chance of surviving. If he goes second, then he has a higher than 50% chance, but it still isn't that high. He survives long enough to continuously send $$ to Steven in the veterans hospital each month.

Also, he knows what hospital Steven is at and is organized enough to send him money every month? His mind was gone from PTSD and heroin.
