Well the show is in 2 hour blocks. so I would say 1 a night. There is a lot of levels to what goes on. I watched every episode twice myself. There's a lot in those 2 hours.

actually the show is in 1 hour blocks, HBO just showed two in row when showing it on air.
but his recommendation is still sound because each of the six episodes is like 1 year in the time between 87 and 90 something. so giving space between each episode helps to distinguish the time passed between episodes.

Finally watched it.. Very well done
