I like Spike Lee but my opinion is bigger budgets because we seen his genius with Inside Man. He never had a budget as big. Another difference is talent. He needs more talented people. Fresh blood and some different screenwriters possibly. Inside Man had a lot of talent and not just acting. As I enter my second life and working on my synopsis for my first screenplay (I won't direct this one), I pay attention to credits especially cinematographers, music supervisors, film composers and editors. All that stuff is an art.

this. spike lee has been wearing a flat top since the mid nineties. malcolm x was the last great movie he did. granted, inside man was a good movie, but it was nothing special. everything else he did was trash.
