Has a film ever had a significant impact on your thinking/worldview/behavior?

Apocalypse Now. I think most war films I saw prior to this one glamorized and sanitized war, a good deal of patriotism mixed in to give you a good feeling. Apocalypses Now had none of that. Very disturbing. Have watched a few times and don't feel the need to revisit it again.
Apocalypse Now is a great movie, but it feels more surrealistic than realistic

I agree with you, especially right after
Clean’s death.
Very few films can rattle me like that particular sequence did.

Felt the surrealism in the final act went hand in hand with the theme of the horrors of war and how it changes people. Damn near felt like Willard’s crew was on a different planet by that point.

It wasn't immediately after I saw it and I was a kid when it came out but in the last year or so I've realized that Pulp Fiction and Tarantino's approach to filmaking changed society

We are a lot more pop culture educated and conscious now because of it. Our life and speech are framed by pop culture references and meta critiques of the art we love because of Pulp Fiction and "Tarantino dialogue"'s effect on society

And no Tarantino wasn't the first artist to rip off and quilt together pieces of his favorite art, but he was the most ostentatious about it. He was the precursor to the internet age where every body blatantly Frankenstein's their influences together, but without the flair to make it their own like he has

The Color Purple and Soul. Soul was just .. beautiful. Edited for the why/ how part. Celie lost her children, sister, and she never had any self esteem. .. all she had was Albert. Enter Suge and she taught her love. I never liked that they became physical in the movie but I kind of get it. Celie went from being meek to strong and Albert gave her .. her sister and kids back. It’s a small summary but it was/ is always dope to see for me. Now for Soul just going through life day in and out and not really living. I realized I could be doing more to be alive .

In Dallas, From Cleveland
Fight Club got to me when I was younger. The line that stuck out was “The things you own end up owning you” it just reset my way of thinking about the feeling of needing “things” to make you feel complete. All things can replaced but living is about having unique experiences and doing the things that make “you” happy regardless of what society leads us to believe.

The Mighty LBC
Basketball Diaries.

Not sure how open I was(mentally) about experimenting with drugs in my life. But I always had a general feel that I wasn't the type to get addicted to anything just from trying it once or twice.

But watching this movie made it a sure thing that I would never in my life play around with Heroine:whoa: I still think about it to this day. lol

Honestly any movie or show that has an accurate portrayal of the plights and struggles for equality for women, minorities, LGBTQ+, lower class, etc. is eye opening for me since I was more or less born with a silver spoon in my mouth as a straight, middle class, white guy.

The Farewell for how a different culture handles death/grieving. Really kind of opened my eyes to a better way to do it than we are traditionally used to in America.

13th - I had known for a while how fukked up our prison/justice system is, but this just made me realize just REALLY how fukked up it is.

I watch TV a lot more than movies though so...
You're the Worst for it's depiction of depression which was lauded for it's accuracy.
Atypical for what is considered to be a fairly accurate portrayal of living with autism.

Peter Tscherkassky's "Outer Space". Barbara Hershey from "The Entity", re-cut.

Saw this in a theater. My introduction to experimental film. Completely changed my vision of film as an art. The concept of creating your own access instead of being beholden to a studio and their budgets. Confirming to no one's expectations from monetary constraints. As naive as it was, I'd never realized that film could be created independently. Devoid of any element I was familiar with in what I'd seen up to that point. Opened up a whole new world to me and I am grateful.

Fair warning, this won't be for everyone:

I had watched some independent film, but A24 is what really caused me to expand my boundaries into the art house style stuff and helped wet my taste for horror as most of the horror I was used to was all that slasher stuff. There's a whole world of horror out there that is vastly superior to 99.9% of slasher films.
