2009 had it's problems but they never had people leaving in mass droves like we've seen numerous times in this era.

Can someone remind me what was going on from 2009 to 2011?

09 was the terrible guest host year(although some were good), but they were kind of stagnant at the time and CM Punk really did help break them out of their funk in 2011.

Peak super Cena, Miz’s initial ascent with Jerry Lawler as his first feud, exciting Nexus invasion, shytty Nexus booking immediately after for weeks, massive Sheamus push, boring matches with Sheamus/Swagger/Orton, Hot heel Edge getting injured and turning into generic boring rockstar Edge, Million Dollar giveaway segments(horrendous), WWECW firmly turning into Velocity Part II, and pushing Kelly Kelly and Michelle McCool to the moon. There’s various other mediocre stuff from that era, but that’s from the top of my head. The highlights from that era were heel R-Truth/Awesome truth, Evan Bourne, Kofi’s rise until Orton stopped it, the original Nexus invasion, Hall of Pain Mark Henry, Orton vs Christian feud (though Christian lost most of the matches), CM Punk, and Daniel Bryan’s rise after being drafted or traded to Raw.

Walking out does hurt WWE more than you think. The optics are terrible and arenas count on 3+ hours of selling concessions. If people are walking out 45 minutes early that is cutting into what the arena would normally sell. It makes WWE look bad.

It also doesn't help when their TV contract expires next year, because who would want to buy the tv rights to a company that has fans walking out?

Yeah, no one wants to see Bryan wasted on Cass, no one wants to see Carmella and Iconics bring Charlotte/Becky/Asuka down. No one wants to see Orton in 2018 even tho he's still decent in the ring. Where the fukk are Gargano and Ciampa? Call them up already. Gargano is not going to get any hotter than he is right now, I'lll tell you that.
