Comin' out the 90s was the expectation to tone down black actors.
What triggered waving pistols on Ventura was Martin cracking under pressure.
He was runnin' on fumes 'til Runteldat, after '02 Martin was finished.
He wasn't as funny after '95, '96 to '02 was fumes.

Watched some of his early stand up on HBO Max this year, the Brooklyn, and it was such a difference, he was on fire back then, he was as timely and observant as the best in his class, not always as intellectual as Rock, or as universal as Eddie, or guys like that, but more of a street edge.

He was coasting from the late 90's, here and there, that is 100% true, remember that one really bad movie with Danny Devito from like 2001?

His time was Bad Boys, Life, and Bad Boys 2, Blue Streak, wasn't very funny, and I saw that in theaters as a kid. Big Mama's House, Black Knight, he had lost all his edge and style.

Life is a classic tho , Bluestreak and Black Knight were funny too. He has the BadBoys series. He should’ve done more serious roles too

That’s the same with most comedians unless they branch out. Everyone’s bit gets old after awhile. Martin Lawrence had a great run in the late 90’s.

:heh:

chappelle shined in blue streak more than martin and only had a few scenes.

it's sad he didn't do more movies in his prime honestly :mjcry:

I love Martin Lawrence but judging by the movies he starred in during the late '90s and '00s he did go through a serious career slump 🤷🏾‍♀️ It's kind of sad too because he was destined to have a much better movie career after Martin ended.

From 1997 to 2008 he starred in...

Nothing To Lose
Life

Blue Streak (wanted to bold it but I'm iffy on this one)
Big Momma's House
What's The Worst That Could Happen?
Black Knight
National Security
Bad Boys II

Rebound
Big Momma's House 2
Wild Hogs
Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins
Collage Road Trip

All of these movies during those 11 years are pretty bad but the bolded ones stand out a little more. A Thin Line Between Love and Hate is arguably his best movie 🤦🏾‍♀️ his movie career after that has been pretty bad outside of a few standouts.
Are you saying Life is a bad movie? :dahell:

It's an okay movie but not great as it's been hyped up to be these days 🤷🏾‍♀️.

I used to sleep on this movie and dismiss it because it was once considered one of Eddie's worst movies but after all the praise I checked it out, and it has its moments 🤷🏾‍♀️ Martin and Eddie mesh pretty well together which is what makes the movie watchable.

They did something to Martin, man.

Maybe he was difficult to deal with or something, but they basically made him a shell of his forner self.

Richard Pryor, Dave Chappelle, even Kanye went thru mental breakdowns from drugs or whatever, and even they didn't get impacted like Martin did. It's like the light got sucked out of him.

On the flipside, I think Martin is legitimately crazy but was able to channel it properly. Maybe it's anti-depressant drugs or maybe it was the stroke.

Sad bc he was the new Eddie and even surpassed Eddie IMO. Glad breh still has alot of money though and is still around.
I don’t think Dave ever actually took the drugs though. They TRIED to get him to take medication. Dave was definitely stressed out, but the media blew it up worse than it was, saying he lost his mind and started smoking crack. He just went away to Africa to clear his mind.
