AUDIO | Haiti Gov't Intimidation of Catholics Demonstrating on Pope John Paul II's Birthday

Despite warnings from high ranking officials of the police institution that they would not be able to guarantee the security of clergy members and parishioners, leaders of the Catholic church in Port-au-Prince held a massive march for the resignation of President Jovenel Moïse on Tuesday.

The organizers for this silent march said government officials, including the President of the Supreme Council of the Judicial Police (CSPJ), interim Prime Minister Jean Michel Lapin, said law enforcement would not be able to guarantee the faithful in their protest.

Father Nere Wesner, who was interviewed by Robest Dimanche for Radio-Tele Zenith FM Tuesday afternoon said among the clergy, the warnings appeared as intimidation. He added that the authorities, outside of their right, falsely had called their protest off but that announcement was disregarded by the population.

The protest was being held on the birthday of the late Pope John Paul II. Father Wesner took the opportunity to remind the population that Pope John Paul II was the first and only pope to have set foot in Haiti during a visit in 1983.

This pope, Wesner also added, delivered a declaration following his meeting with dictator, former President-for-Life, Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier. This declaration would help inspire the revolution which eventually brought the end to the brutal Duvalier dictatorship in 1986, Wesner said.
