Open Letter Calling on the Canadian Government to Stop Backing a Corrupt, Repressive and Illegitimate Haitian President
By Yves Engler

In recent months, Haitians have demonstrated their overwhelming opposition to President Jovenel Moïse. There have been massive protests and multiple general strikes demanding Moïse leave. We consider their demands legitimate.

A recent corruption investigation by Haiti’s Superior Court of Auditors and Administrative Disputes accused Moïse’s companies of swindling $2 million of public money. Some two billion dollars were pilfered under Moïse’s mentor Michel Martelly from Petro Caribe, a discounted oil program set up by Venezuela. Yet, the people’s demand for justice in this money squandering scandal has been met with fierce repression. Police have killed dozens of demonstrators since anti-corruption protests began last year. In the worst documented case, the UN confirmed the Haitian government’s culpability in a terrible massacre of up to 71 civilians in the impoverished Port-au-Prince neighborhood of La Saline in mid-November 2018.

Let’s remember that Moïse assumed office in 2017, through voter suppression and electoral fraud. Barely one in five Haitians voted. The people have been protesting and voicing their opposition to Moïse since day one, but he clings to power because of support from the US, Canada and members of the so-called “Core Group” (France, Brazil, Germany, Spain, EU and OAS). Canada has provided financial, policing and diplomatic support to the unpopular government. Canadian officials have repeatedly promoted and applauded a police force that has been responsible for countless abuses. Recent Canadian and “Core Group” statements completely ignore Moise’s electoral illegitimacy and downplay the enormity of the corruption and violence against protesters.

The undersigned call on the Justin Trudeau government and Canadian state, member of the “Core Group” – to stop backing a corrupt, repressive and illegitimate president Haitians massively reject.

Please note the situation is urgent, as the people’s access to basic necessities is more precarious everyday while the country is paralyzed and dysfunctional due to the political crisis.

Pot calling kettle black. Qatar, an imperialist vassal, where AJ is based, is the mouthpiece of the gov, where US has its biggest airbase in the ME, and where foreign , domestic workers are exploited, and underpaid.

That's not a propaganda article?
Did you read the article?like what did you get from the article thats truthful and made sense?

The NYT is cosigning the same US White Supremacy system in Haiti:
US/western imperialism
Plantations
apartheid
IMF deals
neoleberalism
Right wing policies
Narco state
Mafia Criminal circus( trafficking, drug dealing, kidnapping, rape, murders)
oligarchy governmental control

Every article they remove the US and the core group(France, Canada, Spain, Brazil,UN,EU, OAS) involvement creating and control the system in Haiti. They dont talk about the 15+ years and still going US proxy UN occupation of Haiti from 2004 and now

The article you post is nothing but blatant lies and misinformation. The article paint the US installed haitian president as Haiti anti-corruption saviour who's hands were tied by the opposition. In actuality Jovenel and his party (PHTK) been under investigation of rape , murder, money laundering, embezzlement , massacres, threaten court Judges, kidnapping, intimidating witnesses ...etc

Even before his 2016 fraud election jovenel was already under investigation for money laundering... You know what happen? He remove the investigator from his case just like Trump

Also if it wasnt for the Parliament and the courts taking action, he and the foreign minster Edmond( US picked choose) would've sell all of Haiti to the US and the International Community... which his party(PHTK) been doing since the party started by Sweet Mickey and Hilary Clinton

NYT been putting out numerous pro articles about Jovenel Moise since the protest started with over 5 million Haitians (since last year).

Now look how NYT analyze the hong kong protest and Maduro Nicholas presidency.

Now why is the haiti protest worthless but the hong kong protest to NYT is something that should be admired for Democracy?

Why do NYT support the oust of Venezuela president but not the oust of the US installed Haitian president who's been caught in petrocarrib embezzlement and many other scandal (before and after) with over 5 million haitians protesting since last year for his removal and arrest.

How do Jovenel kill over 600+ Haitian protesters including journalist with NYT and international community not publicly denouncing this genocide idiot and his party like they do with others...

In case you're wondering why the criminal president of #Haiti is still in power. The US will continue to support the criminal regime that it spent $33M to install, as confirmed by US Deputy Assistant Secretary Jon Piechowski. He says there is no other alternative

Full thread:

THREAD: Many analysts point to a seeming hypocrisy in Haitians asking the US to “intervene” in the current political crisis. “How can Haitians, on the one hand, criticize US intervention, and on the other, ask for US intervention?” they ask.

The problem with that analysis is that is assumes the status quo is one in which the US doesn’t play a determinative role in Haitians politics. The sad reality is that it does. For more than 100 years, the United States has held its hand firmly on the scales of Haitian politics.

The problem isn’t the hypocrisy of Haitians, it’s US foreign policy. It’s not US intervention that is needed, it’s the US takings its hand off the scale. It’s ending the US’ interventionist policies in Haiti that have served as a barrier for real change for far too long.

Yes I read it. It was an opinion piece by multiple people. The first was a pro gov official. I take it you stopped reading after that.

Look at how many rifles this young man in #Haiti has in his home. How do they enter the country? Who is arming them? What do you call a society that deprives young people of a decent education and a future, but gives them weapons to kill each other?
