A good companion book to read with GGNS is Darren Acemoglu and James Robinson's, Why Nations Fail. They don't buy Jared Diamond's arguments. They argue that institutions (basically controlled by society's elites) determine the rise and fall of civilizations. They try and dispel the location argument by pointing out that Nogales, Mexico and Nogales, Arizona are only separated by a national border. The people are virtually the same genetically. But life expectancy, crime and GDP are significantly different. They say the reason is government, rule of law, job opportunities, etc. In their view, you fix/contaminate the institutions, you make/break the society.
This is very interested....

I will read this..

yeah i have stated multiple times that american domination is a good thing and that american domination is the stepping stone for black domination

and?

:snoop:

first of all stop throwing in modifiers like "sole"

i said that when europeans came into contact with africans the europeans were ahead technologically and that is why the africans lost

the book explains how the europeans got ahead

the whole premise of the book is that europeans were ahead and more advanced (im not sure why but apparently there is a difference to you between being ahead and being advanced)

the reason i LOLed is that you are disputing something that everybody knows and you are disputing the premise of the book, im just stating facts

i dont know why you are into this intellectually deceitful practice of using absolute modifiers, i never used the word 'entire'

what i did is post a video that discuses slavery and went into the reasons why slavery occurred

and i cosigned that the reason why the slave trade went on for so long is that 1) the europeans were more advanced 2) africans participated in the slave trade themselves

again i stated that the european were more advanced than the africans and you went into a hissy fit and started babbling about asian technology or something

you had a problem with the statement that europeans were more advanced when the whole book is premised on the notion that the europeans were more advanced

the circumstances of how it got to that point isnt going to make the europeans NOT advanced

I don't really know how to explain to you that creating weapon =/= more advance and that there were Asian and African areas that were equally advanced.

And I don't agree with "american domination is a good thing" .

in terms of war creating a weapon makes you more advanced

i dont know how to explain that the guns and ships the europeans had were way more advanced (you can insert an word you want) than anything the africans had

the whole premise of the book is that the GUNS, GERMS and STEEL (get it?) of the europeans made them more advanced than other people

They were not more advanced overall. You can take some wires and plastic and make a medical device..... Or create a weapon that could kill someone. If the second person murked the former and raped them and stole there money..... That doesn't mean that person was 'more advanced' - it simply means he was motivated by different factors.

according to the book GUNS, GERMS and STEEL, GUNS, GERMS AND STEEL made the europeans more advanced, that is the whole point of the book

the whole entire purpose of the book is to explain HOW the europeans got more advanced, it assumes the european were more advanced

@Handsback and @knowmadd summarized the core concepts of it fairly well. Essentially the develop of agriculture due to factors like access of arable lands and thus sedentary lifestyles that allow societies to flourish, the latitudinal nature of continental masses allowing the sharing of cross-society innovations and trade without geographic barriers isolating peoples, the access to domesticable animals (horses vs. zebras), immunities to diseases, and other geographical phenomena led to rates of development we saw in society.

I got it as a Christmas gift over 10 years ago. It's a great, informative read. It's not without flaws though. Some of his conclusions are dubios and not necessarily strongly supported by evidence. But it's a monumental work nonetheless. Part of its importance is that it refutes racial supremacist theories.

I still have to finish it to see if I agree.... but

you can harness technology in many ways and have your innovation manifest equally but with different results. Some of the tech they used to create weapons the Chinese had for thousands of years..

agree with what? i dont really care whether you agree with the book or not, like Vic said, its a good book that everybody should read but its not the whole truth

im just stating that the whole premise of the book is that the europeans were more advanced and then it explains how it got to that point, in other words the issue of whether europeans were more advanced is not the question, its just something that needs to be explained

you can harness technology in many ways and have your innovation manifest equally but with different results. Some of the tech they used to create weapons the Chinese had for thousands of years..

and the ways the europeans were harnessing technology was more advanced than the africans, if you have examples of african technology surpassing european technology than state the examples

vic's explanation was good.... your view was always in reference to the current state of anti-academic culture... implying that somehow this was the case back then with innovation... someone could take ur view in combination with your hyping of Western Imperialism and create the most vicious CAC racial supremacist ideas...

and that's y i don't agree w u. u leave out germs/ geography and place it on culture in nearly every response.

dobt ever read or watch this eurocentric bullshyt created by that old ass cac concocting bullshyt reasons as to why they could stole natuve land and sold slaves.

aka the reason the shyt sat on my shelf all this time.... and was passed up by other books on the reason list. .

I can't do the video thing because I like to read and highlight n corny shyt like that.... BUT

Dude is into geography so of course these are the reasons he would focus on. makes sense (common sense) that agriculture played an important role in the development of technology.
