He was the first NYC/east coast rapper that I can think of that was talking about "Playa Haters" on ""Playin The Game" years before Biggie [and Puff turned into some other shyt and made it about folks hating on him being wack].

Diamond D ain't half the emcee Puba is but his album was WAY better than reel to reel

"Sally Got a One Track Mind" > anything on Reel to Reel.

With that said, 2000 is definitely better than some of you are giving it credit for, I love that album, he wasn't really saying shyt but the production is fire to me.

I was playing 2000 crazily, summer '95.

The production was better than the first album, but you're right, he wasn't saying much on it. Whole album had a mad chill vibe to it though.

Above the fray.
I think the industry didnt like Brand Nubian. they would be cancelled immediately if that was today. Grand Puba was always talking about white man was devil then Sadat and Jamar talmbout Punks Jump Up....:dead:
???
If you haven't heard In God We Trust in a long time, watch the video for Allah U Akbar again and listen to Black n Blue

One for All is classic hip hop record. Sales don't determine classics. It sold less than other classic records of that era because the full group didn't always show up to do promotional work to market the album (aka Pubs no shows). He would barely show up for paid shows, so promoters wouldn't book the group. They were HUGE in NYC metro area, but didn't do the legwork to sell records in other markets.

I didnt say any of that though. One For All is not only a recognized classic but a PERSONAL classic. one of my favorite albums of all time. I am a Brand Nubian fan but even Jamar said himself that they had so much pushback from the labels because of their content. Their topics would never reach mainstream. I am not sure how you got from my post that they didnt have classics. The OP was about Puba and I think this is part of his legacy. At the same time maybe he made some misteps in his solo career but i would have to attribute his lack of mainstream popularity to his subject matter. I also think Treach and Ja Rule are very underrated MC's but it was because of the TYPES of songs they made.

2000 is a personal classic to me. Seems like to me he lost the love for rapping from the interviews I heard and took too many breaks in his prime. Dude was on a run too in the early to mid 90s
