Puba's voice was very cartoonish to me...

Him and Sadat X.

I don't really hear any young folks playing Brand Nubian either.

Kids will be like "Who??

I've never really heard a bad Puba album either. It depends on the day

Sad to see 2000 being shyt on in this thread. That's a personal favorite of mine. Love that album. Puba's style is buttery as hell, and even when he's just rapping about hitting skins for 10 bars straight it sounds like some epic shyt.

It's a shame his career fizzled out. He had all the tools to become an icon.

I think it was the time between Reel to Reel and 2000 that did it. He basically disappeared and when 2000 came out Wu, Biggie, and the West Coast were killing it and that album was kind of overlooked. The game changed a lot between 92-95

Nah, after Reel to Reel, he was doing mad features, and writing for other MC's.

He didn't disappear, at all. He was doing work with Brand New Heavies, Fat Joe, Strictly Roots, Shaggy, Beatnuts, Mary J. Blige, Heavy D, Lord Finesse, Pete Rock and CL, soundtracks and compilations, etc. Dude was everywhere from '92-'96. When he dropped 2000, he was actually doing better on the charts for Hip Hop than he did on Reel to Reel. He had an interview saying that he went Top 5 on the charts with the second album. He couldn't even crack the Top 10 on the first one. From '90-'96, dude didn't take any time off.

After Reel to Reel, he was popping up on mad features. I saw him and Joe perform this live and "Watch The Sound" from Joe's album at The Muse in NYC back in the day, and the crowd went f*cking crazy when Puba came out. He was still that dude all the way up until the group got back together.

Imo Puba's was at top 5 best mc's on earth from 90-92

his work ethic and stories of not showing up to shows didnt help

his solo work is underrated yet could be underwhelming
best explanation of why his name doesn't come up amongst casual fans or people not tapped in to that era where he murdered features. Work ethic, too reliant on his talent and lazy because it came so easy imo, classic underachiever with too much talent but a lack of drive.

his peers would rank him that high, but All For One was criminally slept on. that album didnt have the commercial success to be as classic as it was. that was part of it, the other part was he gave zero fux about calling the white man the devil. he didnt compromise one bit and the original version of the Wake Up video depicted a black man in white face as the devil. He called Tommy Hilfiger a devil because they supposedly reneged on a deal and subsequent remarks made by Hilfiger. he single-handedly made girbaud jeans and hilfiger popular in the culture.

I think the industry didnt like Brand Nubian. they would be cancelled immediately if that was today. Grand Puba was always talking about white man was devil then Sadat and Jamar talmbout Punks Jump Up....:dead:

I though that whole 2000 album was gonna be like “I Like It”

:mjcry:

"I Like It" wasn't what people wanted to hear from Puba in '95, lol.

He had much better sh*t on the album than that. Back then, he said people would come up to him telling him they like the album cuts more. And rightfully so, he had a lot of dope tracks on there that people just slept on.
