Miami is expected to have nearly $94 million cap space and while they don’t need it, they certainly will entertain options to create more.

Reshad Jones is a question heading into the 2020 season. He is currently scheduled to make $15.6 million. Releasing Jones will cost the Dolphins $8 million in dead money but they will offset that with a $7.5 cap saving. Jones is going to be the hot button topic as March approaches. He could redo his contract and add another year or two or the Dolphins could outright release him and take the hit.

Albert Wilson is another name that continues to pop up when discussing players being released. Wilson is scheduled to make $10.8 million. Releasing him saves $9.5 million and Miami will only carry $1.3 million in dead money.

These are the two players that are more likely to be released than any others. Players like Daniel Kilgore will cost the Dolphins nothing if released and will save $3.6 million on the cap. Another name to watch is Charles Harris who did himself no favors in 2019. He will add to the Dolphins dead cap amount if released. Harris will cost Miami $3.1 million and save them only $291,000.

Harris should be gone, the Dolphins can afford to eat his salary instead of paying him $3.4 million to sit around.

Regardless of what Miami’s off-season plans are, they have the money to do whatever they want and they have the means to create more if they wish. Chris Grier has said that they will be aggressive this off-season but they also need to be smart, if not, they will be creating more dead cap space down the road.
This is pretty encouraging. At this point it's all about scouting and studying and player development. That'll make or break us.

Why is it taking so long to finalize Chan Gailey as our OC?

The only trade we should be doing is back for more picks. I would stay at 5. This trading up talk feels like a smokescreen. Tua's medical history is still a red flag. I doubt teams will give up what would be necessary for an oft-injured QB. Detroit does scare me if they move Stafford.

Free agency is so damn important. Locked on Dolphins did a position review this week. Very informative.
I do think they stay with Davis at RT. Draft a LT with one of our 1st.
We got to draft a Center early, 2nd round. Nothing in free agency.
Joe Thuney is the obvious link to us, LG. Sign and draft low for RG, hope some develops.

Our receiving core is solid. Restructure Wilson, and draft a TE low or make a play for David Njoku. There's rumors coming out of Cleveland about him.
Running backs needs to be reworked.

Defense: just get run stuffers and edge rushers. They can work and develop anybody in that secondary.

Fitz maintain his level of play with offensive and defensive changes, good shape.
Detroit going to take that CB for OSU

Wouldn't be surprised at all if teams trade up ahead of Miami to get Tua/Herbert. Draft could go Burrow-Young-Tua-Herbert

I can’t see any team willing to trade up for an injured qb that’s a huge risk

Come March, the Miami Dolphins will be able to go on a big FA spending spree.
So who are some of the big names that the Miami Dolphins should break the bank for?

I’m glad you asked. I’ll break down the top five signings the Dolphins should make when the new league year starts.

Let’s begin.

5. Mackensie Alexander– It’s a little bit lower on the list because there are a lot of great 2020 draft corner prospects that the Dolphins could look at, but it’d be wise for the Dolphins to get a veteran presence at the corner position.

4. Austin Ekeler– The Dolphins need a running back. I’m not sure if I need to dive into this any deeper. The current group is not inspiring. I wouldn’t stop at just signing Ekeler, either. Also, draft a guy, too. Ekeler would be an excellent bang-for-your-buck addition.

3. Anthony Castonzo– Now we’re getting into the meat and potatoes. I would love for the Miami Dolphins to make several free-agency upgrades on the offensive line. Castonzo is an immediate upgrade at any position, probably even the ones he’s never played before. Hold on to that thought, too; we’re going to revisit it.

2. Jadeveon Clowney– I’m well aware that Clowney didn’t want to be traded to Miami earlier in the season. That was while he was on the franchise tag, though, which is worth thinking about. But once Clowney’s a free agent and has his say for a new contract, all bets are off. Miami has the cap space to give Clowney a mega-deal, and if that’s what he’s looking for, then a deal could be made.

1. Brandon Scherff– This is my number one goal for the Miami Dolphins regarding free agency. Scherff would be that cliche plug-and-play lineman. I’m sure I wouldn’t need to twist too many arms for this signing. Scherff would be a big step in the right direction in addressing the offensive line.

Bring talent to South Beach: The Dolphins already offer a great selling point to free-agent talent with the beautiful city. Thanks to an improving team culture and absurd money to give out, Miami could be a compelling spot for free agents this offseason.

  • Joe Thuney, offensive guard – Thuney is one of the best linemen available this offseason and Flores’ familiarity with him helps. A four-year, $34 million contract is easily affordable for the Dolphins, weakens a divisional opponent and helps protect Miami’s quarterback.
  • Chris Jones, defensive end – Jones is the best free-agent defender available and he’ll be paid like it. He can be used as a defensive end in a 3-4 and kicked inside when needed, the type of versatility that Flores loves. A five-year, $97.5 million deal likely gets it done.
  • Jack Conklin, offensive tackle – Upgrading the offensive line must be Miami’s No. 1 priority. While right tackles don’t receive the same recognition as their peers on the left side, Conklin is a Pro Bowl right tackle. A four-year, $52 million deal is a win-win for both sides.
  • Xavier Rhodes, cornerback – Rhodes is no longer a Pro Bowl-caliber cornerback and he’s certain to be cut by the Minnesota Vikings. A return to his roots in Miami could be just what the 29-year-old needs and Rhodes should come on a cheap one-year deal, too.
  • Kyle Van Noy, outside linebacker – Of course, there needs to be a reunion. Van Noy and Flores know each other well and could look to reunite in Miami. The 28-year-old recorded 14 quarterback hits and 6.5 this season. He could offer intriguing versatility for this defense
These five moves alone address critical needs before the draft even arrives. Miami will have added two outstanding tackles and bolstered the defense with upgrades at all three levels.

I see us drafting an OT high, he'll be 32 once the new year start.

2. Jadeveon Clowney– I’m well aware that Clowney didn’t want to be traded to Miami earlier in the season. That was while he was on the franchise tag, though, which is worth thinking about. I would love to get Clowney but he's probably too expensive. Paying $20M for someone that had 3 sacks and only 1 16-game season, nah.

I doubt we sign him.

Plug and play LG at a reasonable price, great cap spending.

  • Chris Jones, defensive end – Jones is the best free-agent defender available and he’ll be paid like it. He can be used as a defensive end in a 3-4 and kicked inside when needed, the type of versatility that Flores loves. A five-year, $97.5 million deal likely gets it done.

Jones is too expensive and I think their riding with Davis at RT.

I can see this on a really cheap deal.
Logan Ryan makes more sense.

I would love this.

I don’t think the Dolphins gone spend money like people think they will and they already said they ain’t gone spend too crazy and we gotta have money for the draft class too. I doubt they break the bank for anybody. We already did that with Xavien.

The Lions are moving on from Stafford. One thing that scared me. They'll get Tua in that scenario. Oh well, Love looked good at the Senior Bowl according to reports.

@intruder v6.1 this is the 2020 offseason thread.
@Da_Eggman in the title, you should specify that this is the 2020 offseason thread. And the other thread should say 2019 season thread, so people don't get confused and to prevent one thread getting merged.

I don't believe that at all. Lions ownership decided to retain the coach and GM for this year, but gave them a "playoffs or bust" ultimatum. I just don't see us drafting a QB when the team has to win now or else. I think this is smoke and hopefully Miami buys it.

Lots of teams want Tua. Will Miami give up assets (5th and 26th?) to move up? That's what I'm hoping.

I can’t see that he’s got a huge contract and a coach on the hot seat is not gonna trade away the franchise qb to pick an injured rookie QBs to start over with
