Is the TJ contact really that bad? Isn't the new salary cap gonna make that a bargain?

Educate me, brehs

The average of what he's making this year and the next 2 years (about 14.5) isn't too bad, its the structure that is pretty bad. 5 mil this year, and 19 the next 2 years. The salary cap is not going to go up much more because they brought in most of the new money at one time, summer of 2016, when teams like Portland and Brooklyn went buckwild with their spending. Just for a comparison TJ got that contract offer after averaging 9 pts off the bench, Dion got a contract averaging 12 mil per year after a career season because all that money dried up from the previous year.

If you can't move TJ now all you can hope is that he opts out after next season and they negotiate a longer term deal that gives him more money but spread out more evenly to help the team. It's possible we could only be on the hook for his contract as constructed for one year.

He's not a 20 million dollar player despite being a pretty damn good bench piece. There are plenty of teams that could use him (He'll, the Cavs would probably love him) but no one wants to pay 20 million for two years for a bench piece.
