It's been deliberately ruined to boost their AI shyt. Granted the search wasn't doing great before AI came into play either but it's even worse now.

Whoever said Enshyttification, is correct.

A lot of these apps are driven by ad money and payola, rather than accurate results.

When you make a general search in Amazon for example, they're not giving you the "best" results.
They're giving you results that are from sellers who've paid Amazon something.
Then more people buy it -> more reviews -> makes it look like it's the standard.

Searching Amazon doesn't produce a list of the products that most closely match your search, it brings up a list of products whose sellers have paid the most to be at the top of that search. Those fees are built into the cost you pay for the product, and Amazon's "Most Favored Nation" requirement for sellers means that they can't sell more cheaply elsewhere, so Amazon has driven prices at every retailer.

Search Amazon for "cat beds" and the entire first screen is ads, including ads for products Amazon cloned from its own sellers, putting them out of business (third parties have to pay 45 percent in junk fees to Amazon, but Amazon doesn't charge itself these fees). All told, the first five screens of results for "cat bed" are 50 percent ads.

This is enshyttification: Surpluses are first directed to users; then, once they're locked in, surpluses go to suppliers; then once they're locked in, the surplus is handed to shareholders and the platform becomes a useless pile of shyt. From mobile app stores to Steam, from Facebook to Twitter, this is the enshyttification lifecycle.

In other words, they're only showing you biased results. The shyt people were scared Tiktok was doing.

I actually don’t have a problem with Google at all.

You just have to know how to search for things with Google.

The only search engine I really find useless is Bing.

I have one of my browsers set for Bing as the main search page so I can collect points for my Xbox gamepass so I’m using the search to build up points and shyt. Like, I actively see how that AI search engine works because I’m just trying to get points, asking it random questions.

Needless to say, they still got some work to do
Bing is very useful for....certain things

Google gauges it's positive metric based on amount of time a user uses its search engine.

So Google literally has made the results horrible ON PURPOSE, to make you use it longer and achieve the result time it desires. :dead:

So now Google is the worst search engine to use.

2 pages in…yall wanna give examples of wtf you’re taking about :mjtf:
For me, I’ll type in multiple words into the search and the search results will come back with one of the words excluded, making the whole search useless.

Fictional example: I’ll type in ‘Combat Jack Podcast’ and the search results will results excluding ‘Jack’. So now without Jack in the equation, I get a bunch of results of Cac’s rambling about WWII, Afghanistan, and Hiroshima bombs

the search operators that were working for 15+ years are no longer reliable.

google cache is gone.

google images has been terrible for years and recently they require users sign in to search for any any gore/nsfw image, found that out when trying to reverse image search the source of a ukraine war photo. yandex has been better for years.

google pushes shopping sites and blog spam sites over actual info. countless times i've had to find results on the 8th or 10th page.

I stopped using it a while ago. To think the product they became known for has ended up like this...

I tried DuckDuckGo for a while but I found myself returning to Google with increasing frequency. StartPage is my main atm and it is somewhere between DDG and Google, the results are good enough. It seems quotes don't work well for any search engine any more? Not StartPage, not SearxNG (which I have been trying to use for technical/specific search queries)

Just started using Yandex Images... for images. It's nice and чистый

and I miss Google cache, for sure

Also at various points I've had to wade through useless spam results like this:

anything dealing with mobile is filled with spam, from flashing firmware, jailbreaking/rooting, troubleshooting errors, how to guides, and searching for apps. It's been like that since 2015 , it looks like a prime domain for AI to cut through the noise if they improve their training dataset.
