Apple engages in alarming anti-competive practices. They leverage their platform at bully and abuse developers on it. Why should Apple get a 30% cut of an ongoing Netflix subscription just because the customer started it on the iPhone? Why should they get in the way of Spotify from selling audio books? Why should they block Microsoft from making Game Pass available on the app store because they have a competing game app service?

Any alleged competition Apple has simply just follows the example Apple sets. Whenever Apple does almost anything watch everyone else do the same thing. Any alleged competition Apple has is an illusion that has zero meaningful influence on Apple's business practices. At this point only government policy can do that.

Microsoft is a software as a service company in comparison. None of their hardware in any field gives them anywhere near the power Apple has. In the cloud Amazon AWS is serious competition in SAS Salesforce is. Microsoft actually has real competition.
Greedy and money hungry yes. Monopoly, no.

There's nothing you can't get from an Android or Microsoft alternative.

Apple isn't a monopoly. They are money hungry. Bit difference.

Apple has all the powers and advantages of a monopoly therefore I call it what it is. You're arguing over the dictionary meaning of the word and I'm arguing over the end result. Even if you buy an Android phone Apple has powerful influence over your experience. Google Play follows the same business practices Apple sets. Apple drops the headphone jack most other companies do. Apple drops the wall charger most other companies do it. Apple drops physical buttons other companies do. Apple charges a 30% fee on everything software wise for developers and requires any apps use their payment system guess what Google also does.

Apple and Google are like Sony and Nintendo. They cater to their own target audience and carve the market up into their sectors and rule those sectors with an iron fist. Because the actual competition is mostly just an illusion they are each effective monopolies. Apple especially dictates the terms almost all mobile customers face on their devices and their hardware experience.

Software developers can't afford to ignore Apple and run to Google for comfort. I used to be able to buy Kindle books on my Kindle app on Android but because Google copied Apple that isn't possible because Amazon doesn't want to pay the 30% Apple tax. Google saw Apple do it and get away with it and they're like "we're doing that too."

I think this will still go through, but Microsoft flew a bit too close to the sun with this deal IMO

It's extremely aggressive for the gaming/cloud space and will likely tip the scales in the next 5-10 years once they start to ramp up
