I like Gangs of New York and Shutter Island... different movies... it's hard to compare them to the mafia joints.
But I disagree with you on Goodfellas, what Scorsese did with that film is nothing short of incredible.. considering all the techniques used he used.. are still used today. Scorsese was masterful behind the camera and the actors were masterful in front of it.

It was definitely just because voters saw it as a rehash of Goodfellas. Looking at 1995 releases and what was nominated and/or won at the Oscars in 1996, there weren't a ton of heavy hitters out there as far as Oscar bait goes.

'Goodfellas' is still the better film and I would say Pesci is definitely better in that film as Tommy but both are modern classics so you can't go wrong.
