I watched the movie way back in 2008 and I got into the show based on Salvatore Esposito's work in Fargo season 4. Best decision I ever made.
This is the Wire set in Italy. I havnt seen a crime drama this good since the Sopranos and the Wire.
I've also never seen so many women and children ruthlessly murdered. Like my God, the mafia in the States doesn't get down the way these goons in Naples do.
Things I like: the Italian trap rap. Hilarious but it's kinda decent. I guess the Neopolitan language lends itself well to rap music cause these Italian rappers always sound like they spitting HARD.
The complete lack of Hollywood crap, which is what bogged down the Sopranos in season 5 and 6. These writers ain't looking to make sweeping statements on the psyche of their characters or make them seem empathetic by having them rant to a shrink for hours. What you see is what you get with them.
One thing I notice about Mediterranean Euros is that they don't hesitate to invade the personal space of another man. Touching on each other, kissing each other, the way they hold a stare for an uncomfortably long time....North American men who aren't gay don't act like that....it's an interesting cultural difference.
