Gohan is an academic forced to conform to his people's warring nature. However, his prodigious talent is on display whenever he concentrates on training. At no single point does Gohan present himself as the premier fighter/warrior. Hell, even in the future he plays the role of a self-imposed guardian as opposed to a dominant force. Compare this to Vegeta whose entire character arc is built on his pride, and supposed royal superiority juxtaposed with Goku. Apart from when he was on his "nerd" phase, the people who "worked" Gohan were giving the beats to Vegeta too. Vegeta is the LeBron to Goku's Jordan and Gohan is more akin to Giannis. It's foolishness to hold Giannis to the same standards as someone who calls themselves "Prince of Saiyan" King From Akron". It doesn't help that the author flounders on the direction he wishes to take his character. I will concede that tracksuit // superhero Gohan was straight-up nonsense.
