Messy, but worth a cinema ticket
Denzel got a bag, and the film got some star power. The only sense it needed to make for a movie called fukkin Gladiator 2This was Cool but nothing memorable. Denzel's character didn't make any sense to me at all.
Just got back. Not sure if it was good or okay, first one is definitely better. The script was a problem and the movie didn't know what it wanted to be. Seemed like a bunch of random set pieces. Lucious (Mescal) motivation was weak compared to Maximus (Crowe). It changed during the course of the movie, but I just didn't care. Maximus had a clear goal, we knew what he was gunning for and a clear why. Lucious hate for General Acacius (Pascal) seemed forced.
Macrinus (Denzel) character was smart, conniving, and resourceful, he played a good politician. The writing of his character could've been better though, too many conveniences, you pretty much know what you're going to get from Denzel by now.
First mini coliseum battle almost took me out of it.
Some good battles and you felt the kills. First battle wasn't bad, but pales in comparison with the epic feel of the battle in the first one against the Barbarians. You could feel the ending coming to a long campaign. The way they established Maximus with his entrance was pure respect from his troops and further confirmed by the Emperor. This was great juxtaposition against the cowardice of Commodus (Phoenix) arriving.
Actually all the battles were better in the first one. You can't top the re-enactment of the Battle of Zama.
No good side characters. Lucious had no Juba (Hounsou) or Hagen (Moeller). I guess the medic guy was supposed to be his ace? Severely missing Commodus, you couldn't wait for Maximus to finally kill him. The twin emperors were just annoying. Lucilla (Nielsen) really didn't do anything. Proximo was missed(I know he's dead dead).
I think the main issue was that the first established the story and clear motivations. The second movie kept trying to hide and obscure the motivations to reveal later or add twists and it hurt the narrative. The ending was too dumb. Worth a watch if you can catch it in IMAX. Money wasn't wasted, but Gladiator is one of my favorites movies ever. Top 3 to me.
TLDR: Needed a better script. First one is better.
