No it doesn't. If anything, it perpetuates their criminal activity. All they know is jail, and when they're out, they're in an even worse situation then when they came in. Some of them WANT to go back, because they can't handle being out and end up going back to that criminal life. Jail is the only stable thing in their life, it makes sense to them.
exactly. the question we have to ask ourselves is this. are we in it for REVENGE? you are so hell bent on a criminal REAPING what he sows to the point you are willing to setup a society where criminals become better criminals in jail, then when they get out (cause most will get out). they re-offend, making our streets less safe. all because you want a bad guy to feel the pain aka REVENGE.
me personally. i would rather have a much safer society. but thats just me.

I'm not quite sure what this had to do with the whole 'socialism vs. capitalism' argument. It's more to do with prudent and efficient government spending. Not have corrupt politicians pocket tax money, or spend money on foreign wars, wasteful subsidy programs, neglecting education and healthcare, stick your nose in foreign affairs with the ulterior motive of acquiring petroleum, etc.
Countries like Switzerland and Norway (coincidentally not in the European Union) know how to manage their government and you can see their tax dollars at work.
