I always found that some people give white people too much credit for why they decided to give us civil rights during the 1960s, if they could have prolonged their overt oppression of African Americans while being respected on the international stage they would have continued doing so. Fortunately for us america wanted to be seen as the geopolitical leader during the 50s-60s with Cuba, USSR CHINA VIETNAM etc and needed the clean up the mess in their own backyard which is why the civil rights generation worked. Additionally, you don't have to recognize someone from a civil rights perspective to continue exploiting them resource wise, you could just do what white americans now do with South American migrants.
