I'm skeptical that "all minorities" and "most people of the Levant" have sided with Assad because that seems to contradict what I read from various writers, but I admit I have more reading to do.

Also, the premise that anyone America opposes should automatically be sided with is not a strong argument, unless it is your belief that the US should not involve itself in the affairs of other countries even when atrocities are being committed against the citizens of a country by its own government.

The one question you have to ask is why the opposition only sunni? Why haven't the Druze or Kurds sided with the rebels? Exactly. The Druze have no love for Assad but only side with him because the sunni islamist rebels did them real dirty. The Kurds do not trust the regime but they also do not trust the rebels. They have been fighting the rebels for the longest time. Alawites and Christians do not trust the rebellion because so many of the rebels have fought alongside jihadist groups. Before ISIS went rouge the rebels had an alliance with ISIS back in the early days of the war. It is the same thing now with Al Qaeda in Syria aka Al Nusra aka Jaish Fateh al Sham. It is the rural poor sunnis who are the opposition. The urban sunnis in Aleppo, Damascus, Homs and Hama all support the regime and not the rebels. Read these to understand why no minorities sided with the opposition.
