why is it okay for tens of thousands of men, women, and children to be slaughtered in syria's civil war, but the end of the world is the use of chemical weapons....? i recognize i'm ignorant about this and am sincerely trying to understand why one thing is acceptable and the other isn't......

IMO it's how effective of a psychological and military weapon it is. The world powers realized this after WW1 and most never wanted to use it as a conventional weapon again. In tactical battles it can literally even the odds if your side is at a disadvantage.

ppl who live near the air base are saying this :jbhmm:

For residents of Shayrat and other villages, the airbase was instrumental in keeping at bay Islamic State militants hiding in the eastern desert of Homs.

Now with the base so severely damaged, Mohammad Zefa, a distant cousin of Wael Zefa, expected Islamic State to try to advance to the village.

“Women and children have already started to leave Shayrat to go to Homs city. We’re not afraid of airstrikes. Our fear is the attack from the east,” he said.

For him, Friday’s attack was “proof that the U.S. helps Daesh.” He referred to Islamic State by its Arabic acronym.

Syrian villagers near U.S. missile strike know the sound of battle — but never as horrific as this

To be totally honest concerning Syria (and the Middle-East in general) the hypocrisy predates Trump and concerns Europe too...yeah there's this idea that chemical weapons are not to be used (which is good) but for whatever reasons splinter bombs, phosphorus and ammunition with depleted uranium is no biggie
