Minimum wage here is 15.50 and there are tons of abandoned commerce districts all over the county.

20 ph is 41k a year per employee

The average small business nets 60k a year and closures were happening before pandemic assistance. Now that's gone and they have to pay more people to subsidize the governments failures..... hahaha hahaha Wipeout

There's going to be a shift back to mom and pop/family business to cut back on staff. Others will be forced to close or be forced to pick up an additional job to make up the chump change they're losing. Many others, will go out of business. They'll turn these abandoned commerce districts into rental properties.

This initiative should be applied to large corporate chains that net billions per year not a family business barely getting by. But meh more entrepreneurs for the fire as we get another day closer to Amazon Eats for everyone.

Its.wild how anti establishment democrats pretend to be while overtly shuffling citizens to a true, corptocracy.

Pump the brakes. This law only applies to major corporate chains that have over 60 locations Nationwide.

*But for some reason excludes the chains that make thier bread.

If the McDonald's in California start baking their own bread than :wow:

I know he's not perfect but I think he would be the best candidate right now in fact.
This is a slippery slope. The next group will be hotel workers wanting $30/hour, full pension and 32 hour work week. Please take a few minutes and review the hell hole that is CA. He and is ilk are the reason for the spiral down of a once-great place to live. I'd write more but I have to step around this homeless encampment to pay $6.50 for no brand petrol.

Biden will hand the reigns over to him...Kamala is done
Nah. In an election that's going to be all about the economy, Newsom will get demolished in any debate solely due to the current state of California. If Vegas is taking bets, I'd put my money on the DNC bringing in current commerce secretary Gina Raimondo. She's a 2 time Governor, a woman, current holding a high Federal position, plus she is fully bought and paid for by Wall St.

You laugh but

"A minimum wage increase doesn’t kill jobs,” the researchers explain. “It kills job vacancies, not jobs. The higher wage makes it easier to recruit workers and retain them. Turnover rates go down. Other research shows that those workers are likely to be a little more productive, as well.”

Does Raising The Minimum Wage Result In Job Losses In Small Firms?

Supply and demand goes both ways especially when low skill workers are competing for relatively high pay (all things considered). They can be more selective

O it does. Well I don't have an issue with that. Assumed it also applied to small businesses who just sell garbage food that would be classified as fast food. Well that's good news

Even in small businesses, minimum wage hikes don’t cause job losses, study finds.

“A minimum wage increase doesn’t kill jobs,” said Reich, chair of UC Berkeley’s Center on Wage and Employment Dynamics (CWED). “It kills job vacancies, not jobs. The higher wage makes it easier to recruit workers and retain them. Turnover rates go down. Other research shows that those workers are likely to be a little more productive, as well.”

The federal minimum wage has been $7.25 an hour since 2009, but California and dozens of state and local governments in recent years have raised their minimum to $15.50 or more.

The new working paper is the first ever to examine the impact of higher minimum wages on small, low-wage businesses, a sector that includes restaurants, grocery and retail stores, and child care operations. It’s the second recent study by Reich and co-authors that challenges the conventional wisdom on minimum wages.

A working paper released last fall and revised in December found that $15-an-hour and higher minimum wages in California and other states and cities gave employees more financial security without causing their employers to cut jobs. (An updated version of that paper will be released in coming weeks, Reich said.)

Business groups have long warned that teen workers would be the most likely to lose their jobs when employers confronted higher minimum wages. But Reich and his colleagues found that higher wages often allowed teenage employees to work a little less and study more.

The findings have dramatic implications for public policy: Most obviously, higher wages reduce poverty and financial insecurity. But, Reich said, governments currently spend millions of dollars every year on tax breaks for businesses confronted with government-approved minimum wage hikes. Those expenses may be unnecessary, he said.

In addition to enjoying higher consumer demand, small businesses that adopt living wages benefit from a more productive workforce with fewer incidental payroll costs.26

Quite simply, employees that make a fair wage are able and willing to work harder. When workers experience less economic anxiety, they are better able to focus on their tasks. Moreover, better pay is related to better health outcomes, meaning workers take fewer sick days.

It also means that employees are more invested in their work and are less likely to be late, miss a shift, or have other disciplinary problems.27 In total, worker productivity and the quality of service increases, potentially allowing a firm to increase its prices to compensate for the higher pay.28 For example, a study of nursing home staff performance after a minimum wage increase showed a significant increase in the quality of care received by residents.29

In addition to higher productivity from individual workers, small businesses benefit from lower staff turnover.30 The time and money needed to recruit, interview, and train a new employee eats up significant resources.

By some estimates, it costs about one-fifth of a worker’s annual salary to replace them, and low-wage jobs such as retail and food service are among those with the highest turnover rates.31 In the long term, raising the minimum wage will likely bring cost savings to small businesses that find it easier to retain employees after the wage increase.
