You never know breh. No one thought any of these sequels (JW, FF7, TDK) would go on to break records when they were first announced. Two of those were mainly because their stars passed away before the release which made more people go see them.

It's pretty obvious how many people was affected by him. The movie itself wasn't even the best in the series, and definitely wouldn't have sold more than FF6 unless he died. Dude was so relevant that Wiz pretty much had his best seller cause of him

He was one of the stars of what was already a major franchise worldwide. While people may not have cared about his work outside of these movies, anyone who is a fan of the F&F franchise would know him and care that he died. That would be a direct boost to the interest in his last movie of the franchise.
