I'm a casual boxing fan, so bear with me. Canelo is the WBC MW champion, which is 155-160. If they're fighting for the MW title, GGG should be able to weigh anywhere between 155-160. Why is Canelo asking for a catchweight in a title fight? I could understand if both fighters are coming from different divisions and they agree to meet half way. But in this case they're both MWs. And from what I've heard, they're both the same size. Is Canelo trying to drain GGG with the weight cut? Why is he asking for a catch-weight? They're fighting for the MW title, so they should both be able to weigh anywhere between 155-160.

Canelo isn't a middleweight and he won the mw title off of a blown up 147lber. Canelo is a 154lb fighter he just uses that 1+ lb rule for non title fights so all of his post Mayweather L fights been at 155.

But he has the MW title and is ranked as a MW. So he should be defending that belt at any weight between 155-160. If he's not a MW and has no plans of defending between 155-160, then he should vacate the title imo.

Canelo re-hydrates to 175 from what I've read, so he has enough size for the MW division.

Canelo-Golovkin: De La Hoya Calls Loeffler, Negotiations Begin - Boxing News
Loeffler confirmed to BoxingScene.com on late Monday afternoon - "I spoke with Oscar yesterday and we've scheduled to talk again tomorrow.
The call on Sunday did not include any real negotiating or specifics pertaining to this potential match-up.
"It was just an introductory call," explained Loeffler. "I have a good relationship with Oscar and all the people at Golden Boy. We did a very successful and cohesive promotion when we did the unification fight between David Lemieux and Gennady. So I don't foresee why we wont be able to work out a deal. I think it's going to be a cordial discussion."

Can't wait until we get the announcement the fight is made.
I am betting I will be busy at work then come home and see my ring alerts be crazy.
:lupe::ohlawd:

I think when (not if) this fight gets made we should have a joint thread. One thread for the fight, but someone from #CaneloCartel gets to do Canelo's intro and a #GGGoodBoys rep doing GGG.

That's not the way boxing works the bigger draw is the one who dictates details like this. Just like when Canelo went down to 152 and defended his Jr middleweight title against Floyd.

What he rehydrates to does not matter. What matters is what weight he makes and he feels comfortable at.

This dude tried to play it as if GGG gave Canelo that work:

:stopitslime:

That's when someone else had to speak up and even GGG stan, Doug Fischer (who was there when they sparred), had to give the truth about it:

Yeah, that is why I didn't include any other tweets, because everything seemed biased. Apparently those are the only released to the public pictures of their sparring. According to them Abel has video of it.

They were tweeting with Doug Fischer and this guy: Sam Garcia (@SamGarciaBoxing) on Twitter, who apparently has boxing connections in California. Fischer said it was Sam Garcia who called him and told him he was at Sanchez's gym and saw GGG and started spreading the word of his talent and that is how Fishcer started following GGG's career.
GGG was working for the Ouma fight and Canelo for Rhodes. Garcia was saying how GGG was working relaxed and easy and Canelo was struggling a bit. After that analysis Garcia says that Canelo has no shot and GGG will win easily.

Even #GGGoodBoys know not to take too much out of that. First it was sparring, second it was 5 years ago and Canelo was still very inexperienced, and third it seems overinflated. I think everyone can agree by all accounts GGG got the better of sparring, but he was far ahead in his development at the time. What makes it so exciting is that now Canelo is entering his prime and GGG is right in the middle of his prime. The guys are different fighters (especially Canelo).

That is why the fight is so great. Two excellent fighters who are ready to fight each other at the right times in their career. I am pulling hard to see this fight because I think for both Canelo and GGG there isn't a better fight to be made.

Found this:
Gennady Golovkin Extensive Interview on Canelo, Much More - Boxing News

GGG interviews always are a bit odd, maybe it is the translation, but there always seems to be a :patrice: moment, where you question if the writer didn't just make things up.

Overview:
- When he went into the ring at Canelo's request he thought they would talk directly, but it ended up being just him standing there.
- Negotiations for him and Canelo to fight have been going on long before just right now.
- Felt his appearance at Canelo vs. Khan was a marketing ploy. Was told HBO wanted more hype for Canelo-Khan and that ticket sales were a bit slow.
- Now is the time for he and Canelo to fight. The fight is hot enough right now. If GB is worried about money, then they certainly can do a rematch or two. Fans would oblige.
- He wants to make it clear that if the fight between Canelo does not happen, it is not his fault. He will agree, but wants the MW title and the respect it brings, so it needs to be at 160.
- Does not worry about criticism of his opponents. He will fight who agrees to fight him. He also wants to unify division, so he must fight the mandatories.
- A lot of people talk about fighting him, but few actually follow through. Canelo talks, he wants him to follow through. Sergio Martinez avoided him.
- Would he fight Floyd? Yes, but it is his 50th fight. The opponent is up to him.
- He would fight Danny Jacobs, but their camp seems to be quiet in talking about fighting.
- He would fight Saunders, but Saunders team makes unreasonable requests. They mentioned fighting on the Fury undercard. He is not an undercard fighter. Let's fight in the US or the UK, but make it a big event.
- He and JCC have talked. It certainly is possible one day.
- Making 160 lbs is easy for him. It is his true weight class. He has weighed 164 lbs a month out from the fight for 10 years.
- He would only move up to fight at 168 if it is a big fight that is worth his while.
- Would he fight Froch? I do not know what to say about him. This is a man whose wife makes the decisions for him. That's all.
- He doesn't talk much publicly, he lets his marketing team handle that. His twitter page is run by his marketing team.
- In the future would like to help boxers from the Soviet Union, particularly in the Olympics.
- Is very open to the idea of doing a fight in Kazakhstan.
- Deferred to his manager to detail how the Andre Ward negotiations really played out. According to GGG's manager: HBO asked Ward's team if they would start negotiations with GGG's team. Ward's team refused. When Ward's team decided to present an offer to GGG, they had already agreed to fight Lemieux. Loeffler responded to Ward's team within 15 minutes and told them they had signed a fight already. Soon after Ward announced he was moving up a weight division. GGG refuses to comment on Ward because Ward has lost his respect by lying about their negotiations and trying to make GGG look bad.
