Gennady Golovkin Extensive Interview on Canelo, Much More - Boxing News
GGG interviews always are a bit odd, maybe it is the translation, but there always seems to be a
moment, where you question if the writer didn't just make things up.
Overview:
- When he went into the ring at Canelo's request he thought they would talk directly, but it ended up being just him standing there.
- Negotiations for him and Canelo to fight have been going on long before just right now.
- Felt his appearance at Canelo vs. Khan was a marketing ploy. Was told HBO wanted more hype for Canelo-Khan and that ticket sales were a bit slow.
- Now is the time for he and Canelo to fight. The fight is hot enough right now. If GB is worried about money, then they certainly can do a rematch or two. Fans would oblige.
- He wants to make it clear that if the fight between Canelo does not happen, it is not his fault. He will agree, but wants the MW title and the respect it brings, so it needs to be at 160.
- Does not worry about criticism of his opponents. He will fight who agrees to fight him. He also wants to unify division, so he must fight the mandatories.
- A lot of people talk about fighting him, but few actually follow through. Canelo talks, he wants him to follow through. Sergio Martinez avoided him.
- Would he fight Floyd? Yes, but it is his 50th fight. The opponent is up to him.
- He would fight Danny Jacobs, but their camp seems to be quiet in talking about fighting.
- He would fight Saunders, but Saunders team makes unreasonable requests. They mentioned fighting on the Fury undercard. He is not an undercard fighter. Let's fight in the US or the UK, but make it a big event.
- He and JCC have talked. It certainly is possible one day.
- Making 160 lbs is easy for him. It is his true weight class. He has weighed 164 lbs a month out from the fight for 10 years.
- He would only move up to fight at 168 if it is a big fight that is worth his while.
- Would he fight Froch? I do not know what to say about him. This is a man whose wife makes the decisions for him. That's all.
- He doesn't talk much publicly, he lets his marketing team handle that. His twitter page is run by his marketing team.
- In the future would like to help boxers from the Soviet Union, particularly in the Olympics.
- Is very open to the idea of doing a fight in Kazakhstan.
- Deferred to his manager to detail how the Andre Ward negotiations really played out. According to GGG's manager: HBO asked Ward's team if they would start negotiations with GGG's team. Ward's team refused. When Ward's team decided to present an offer to GGG, they had already agreed to fight Lemieux. Loeffler responded to Ward's team within 15 minutes and told them they had signed a fight already. Soon after Ward announced he was moving up a weight division. GGG refuses to comment on Ward because Ward has lost his respect by lying about their negotiations and trying to make GGG look bad.
