In 1997 with the 11th overall pick we picked some bum named Jason Ward, Ottawa took Marian Hossa with the next pick.
In the famous 2003 draft that produced so many stars, we picked Andrei Kost*tsyn 10th overall, ahead of Jeff Carter, Zach Parise, Ryan Getzlaf, and Brent Burns. Those guys went on to have great careers and Kost*tsyn was out of the league at 27 years old.
With the 40th pick in that same draft, we picked another bum named Cory Urquart, 5 picks later Boston drafted French Canadian superstar Patrice Bergeron. 
In 2012, we drafted future racist scumbag Alex Galchenyuk 3rd overall, Toronto drafted Morgan Rielly 2 picks later.
In 2018, we drafted Jesperi Kotkaniemi 3rd overall, Ottawa picked Brady Tkachuk with the next pick.
Not to mention some of the franchise destroying trades we've made; John Leclair and Eric Desjardins for Mark Recchi, the Patrick Roy trade, Ryan McDonagh for Scott Gomez and his albatross contract, and Mikhail Sergachev for Jonathan Drouin.
