Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk hasn’t ruled out Budenholzer remaining with the team, according to a person with knowledge of Schlenk’s plans. Budenholzer is under contract for two more seasons and about $14 million. The Hawks have told teams interested in hiring Budenholzer that they will require compensation, most likely draft picks, to release him from his contract.

None of y'all can tell me that this pissing contest for leverage is a good look for the franchise. Schlenk wants picks, Bud wants to leave and neither can get what they want without the other. What a fukking mess

We should at least tell em to swap picks next year

I don't even think he goes to NY. Thats a worse situation than us especially with KP out for potentially all of next season. I think Bud is trying to get to a team that is going to satisfy what Schlenk mainly wants:

1. Draft picks as compensation

That's the only way he gets out of here and I'm sure is a part of any interview process he's a part of

Lottery pick? No way, maybe a 2nd.

Also, The Ringer NBA Podcast & Dunc'd On do draft prospect talks.
nikka, Bud ain't leaving. Our President said this is much to do about nothing. The compensation that Atlanta is asking for is scaring teams away

And yes, they will dropped that #9 pick if they want Bud. Nothing else will do.

Post the quote or else stop posting that. Schlenk and Bud both have not issued a formal statement on what's going on. Also Bud has only talked to one team (PHX) and was not offered a contract. We still don't know what compensation the Hawks are seeking because it hasn't got to that point yet

Bud is not leaving.

It's pretty clear that he is leaving...it's just a matter of finding the right team with the right compensation (I don't think a lottery pick is necessary to do this deal and I don't think it has to be a pick in this year's draft). This is a 3-5 year rebuild, Schlenk wants assets in the form of draft picks for years to come. If Schlenk could get a mid-late first rounder for Bud next year or the year after he's going to be open to making a deal

I keep telling you Bud ain't leaving, how many times do I got to say it before you get it through your brain that hes not leaving.

Steve Koonin: 'This draft has 10 NBA starters'

Travis plan is to rebuild with Bud. Not without him.

A couple of things:

Steve Koonin is the Hawks CEO, not President, but in his role he literally oversees everything Hawks/Philips Arena related except basketball operations.

In this interview he said "it's a little bit difficult to talk about...if I had to handicap it I think this could be much ado about nothing. We'll see what happens but I'm very optimistic that good things are coming."

When asked if Bud interviewing with other teams means he's definitely leaving "I think that would be the wrong way to read things...it is unusual but there's a story and it'll come at the right time and everything's quite positive."

My take on this interview (which was done on Friday) is

1. There's something going on behind the scenes that the Hawks aren't willing to talk about on the record. These were very vague answers that Koonin gave

2. Get ready for the Hawks PR spin when/if Bud leaves. For the record I don't see a scenario where Bud comes back (coaches under contract don't go on job interviews with multiple teams only to return to their original team). But if Bud does come back, the distrust and commitment between him and the organization can't be ignored. I think it could have a toxic effect on the rest of the organization if he were to come back

As for your actual post, Schlenk didn't hire Bud. Neither did Ressler. So they have no loyalty to Bud and their rebuild is an indictment on Bud, meaning we wouldn't have to do all of this if Bud had been better at player personnel as President. So no I don't think that Bud has to be a part of this rebuild. They like him as the coach and developing players, but he's not an essential part of this rebuild and he's not Schlenk's guy. That can't be stated enough

Bud is gone. The writings on the wall. At this point it's about finding the right team and the appropriate compensation. I don't see how you think our coach interviewing with different teams is an indication that he's 100% committed to this rebuild and wants to stay...that makes no sense to me

I don’t disagree but I think if Bud comes back it will have been worked out. Otherwise they would just cut him a check and tell him to kick rocks.

Dont be that guy, you know what I meant when I said president, leadership. CEO, President, VP of bball ops, all leadership.

He ain't leaving, trust me, if he do, we will be extremely well compensated which teams are trying not to do which is why Bud is likely staying. This is Atlanta doing an ole to Bud. They had some disagreements and Atlanta wants Bud fully in. He said hes willing but he also wants to see how the market is like. That's all. The Hawks cant just trade Bud. Bud has to want to leave and the Hawks have to agree with the compensation. It's not that easy. This is why Bud is lower on most teams coaching board even if hes by far the best. The cost for Bud and his trade is sky high. Bud wants similar salary and Atlanta wants a high lottery pick in this draft or two mid 1st round picks. Teams are just going through the process. Its highly unlikely Bud will leave.
