france fails to rescue hostage in somalia

French troops have failed in a raid to rescue a hostage in Somalia because of strong resistance.

French special forces launched an overnight operation to rescue an intelligence agent in southern Somalia on Friday.

The French agent has been held hostage by an Islamic militant group in Somalia since 2009.

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Saturday that one French commando died, another is missing and 17 Somali fighters were killed during the raid.

He said he believes the hostage was unfortunately killed by his captors.
But the militant group said in a statement that the French agent is still alive.

The group also says a French soldier is now in its custody.

On Saturday, a French soldier was killed in a military operation France embarked on in the West African country of Mali
