Again it’s clearly hybrid action/RPG.
The action of those games is serviceable, but it’s the RPG elements that are the skill/strategy/challenge
An action game is more about your skills with the sticks, combos, blocking, positioning, etc.
To my knowledge Square has not really done that before.
Final Fantasy XV was like that but people complained, because they didn't take the time to learn how to play, but also the game is too easy with no difficulty mode, and can spam items, they took away item spam in this game, but also made based around stats and buffs instead of anything action related, and like you said there's no combos or timing required in this game, and you spam the same moves over and over, and each character only has one combo, Noctis had more attack animations than the entire cast of that game by himself
But I think they will correct the mistakes they made with XV with XVI, the Devil May Cry director is working on the combat so I expect it to be the game to bring the series back to elite status
