Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach revealed that he advised WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao to verbally pursue Floyd Mayweather Jr., the WBC/WBA champion.
Pacquiao filmed a commercial for Foot Locker, where the boxer was overjoyed at the thought of Mayweather agreeing to fight him.
In past interviews, Pacquiao was quiet. But now the boxer and his team are pressing the issue in interviews, on social networks and plan to continue their verbal assault.
Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, is hoping to reach a deal for the fight with CBS CEO Les Moonves.
“We’ve gotta antagonize this guy to get him to come to the table, I think,” Roach told The Los Angeles Daily News. “So Manny’s talking and I told Manny, ‘Manny, you keep doing that commercial. Do that every time you talk to somebody from the press. Because then they can write something about how bad you want the fight. But if you don’t say nothing, they can’t write nothing. I said, ‘If the press gets behind it, and the boxing world is already behind it, I think it will make more noise for us and I think it’ll make the fight happen faster.’”
