How often do people die with that many fires a day?

And is the job your passion? I trained so that I could be a volunteer firefighter, but I would never want it to be my day job.
We average about 10-12 civilian deaths a year.

I’ve been on a few fatal fire scenes, not a pleasant sight. Terrible way to go out.

I love the job, it’s my way of paying it forward. Whether it’s pulling someone out of a fire or helping a 85 year old lady after a nasty fall. It’s all good work, makes me feel great to say I saved a life. Keeps me in good shape also, imagine getting paid to stay in shape

No knock on the 6 fig 6 cert brehs but it ain’t no way I could look at a screen most of the day

What's the purpose of the giant wheel behind the truck.
I'm guessing it has something to do with the ladder or some other function?
I refuse to believe it was secondary steering of some sort like Kramer's dumb ass and other media suggested on some hollywood ignorance shyt.

Have you ever seen a cat skeleton in a tree? They always get down by themselves.

Also why would we dedicate the equipment /manpower to getting animals out of trees when someone is trapped in a rolled over car or having a cardiac arrest

Those fire trucks with the secondary steering wheels are called “tillers”. We don’t have them in my department so I’ll be honest I know nothing about them. I’ve seen them mainly out on east coast departments like DC, Baltimore, Philly,

How is the SCBA policy for yall? Ours was lax when I first came on but admin has gotten very strict with it. It could be a small bedroom fire and they want us masked up thru the whole incident duration.

Don’t blame them, I want to live a healthy life after I retire

Honestly we've had an in depth discussion on our SCBA policy and I work for a big fire dept. We are really old school in that way. If you ever heard of or about #Dannywouldgo then that might give you an idea of how a lot folks that got time be moving.

I’m big city too so I’m assuming yall do aggressive ass tactics also. I think aggressiveness is great as long as it’s within reason. If it’s a known board up Bando with holes in the floor and a shytty roof why be super aggressive ?

If its lives to be saved, by all means lay it all on the line to make the save

Does this go home with you?

How do you deal with stress?

How many dead people do you see a month in average?

Kids?
I try my best to leave work at work, otherwise that shyt will eat you alive mentally. I live alone and my girl stays an hour away so its great to get off to a quiet home if I have a tough shift.

Many guys I work with have to come home to wives, multiple kids, second/third jobs, projects to do around the house etc so they never get that chance to decompress and catch up on sleep.

I see dead people almost every shift. Sometimes multiple. Could be a construction accident, suicide, OD, nasty murder scene or an old lady that passes away peacefully in her sleep :manny:

My worst call was a kid shot and didn’t make it. That was well over a year ago. One of those things I can’t unsee unfortunately

thats rough, the dead faces don't follow you throughout the week, smell of body decay, tension from onlookers?

what is your self care routine??

The Only calls that get to me are involving children. Like I said in a previous post, I bawled my eyes out after I had a little girl shot and didn’t make it. I remember nasty, gruesome scenes involving adults but they don’t really bother me. You feel for the families but its not like I’ll ever meet them :yeshrug:

We have counselors, chaplains, support groups etc which are available to us 24/7 even off duty. Whether a phone call or someone will come to your crib and make sure you’re good.

Years ago when I was living in Bk there was a fire in an apt building. Prob 6-7 story prewar apt. Mad fire trucks on the other side of the street from me where the fire was, nobody/nothing blocking the way forward but there is a hose crossing the street on the ground. So I'm creeping forward like 2 mph looking for some sort of instruction as I enter the intersection and out of nowhere a firefighter jumps in front of my car, kicks the bumper and tells me to take a right.

Explain. :skip:

Are you familiar with the plague of fires the Bronx went through in the 70's/80's?

Props to you for the work you do.

insurance money scam bc their tenants couldn't pay rent
