I think the reluctant hero angle could have worked if they made it clear how much of a badass storm trooper he was. Like he was partners in crime with Kylo, but got decided to go a different route. Make it seem like he was a legit threat to Kylo, then have him lose/Rey save the day. That way it would have been a bigger surprise.

At this point the only way they could make Finn a salvageable character is if they did some kind of time skip.
